This next Pre-Season Game will determine the depth makeup of this team. It's been discussed in other threads except for QB. Drew Lock has to play to show he can backup Daniel Jones, because Tommy DeVito has shown nothing in two appearances. He's 18 of 34 and a 52 comp %, no TD's and 4.9 YPA. He is clearly not in DJ's league and not starter material. There are several unsigned QB's out there that can be a qualified backup. Cutting Lock is nearly a 5 MM Cap Hit but with Jones' injury history, the Giants need a qualified backup. In my opinion, if Drew and Tommy fail to prove anything this next game, I think Schoen has to take a look at one of these QB's.

I think you have to hope for a cut.

Is Locks money guaranteed?

Ed: I don't see things the same way you do (or I'm making different assumptions). My take:

The general thesis is the Giants will live or die with Jones. Although IMO its a long shot to occur, he's their one and ONLY chance to contend this year.

If I'm right, then the attitude is to stand pat with what they have and pick a QB next year. If Jones fails,  they don't want to waste money. Further, playing DeVito will confirm that he doesn't belong (or lightning will strike and pigs will fly). The attitude next year will be the equivalent of what the Bears did this year. Move up to Pick One of the first round of the draft (if necessary - ugh!) and take the best QB, immediately naming as the day-one starter. With this type of "all-in" approach, you don't want anyone hanging around on the roster who might even be considered a viable contender for the starting job (IMO it would only "cloud the water").

If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

Yes, and no difference in a post-June 1st cut. They will carry him. I think they should look at Siemian and Gabbert, maybe Barkley. If an attractive cut drops, that would surely be the way to go unless Tannihill would be willing to take a one-year instead of sitting.

No doubt they are committed to Jones this year but to set themselves up without a backup plan is setting themselves up to lose games if DJ goes down. As you saw on Saturday, he still can't slide.

Ed: You didn't read between the lines. If Jones is a flop, they do not WANT to win any games. They want to pick first (or as close to first as they can without intentionally tanking). That's the "second half" of the strategy to go with the "Jones or bust" approach. Bob

I don't believe that the Giants and Mara would take that approach. They want to win games. Regardless.

I think DeVito has been fighting for a spot on the 53 this camp and PS games.  I don't think he has made a compelling case for keeping him on the final 53.  With the tape he put up, I don't think there is a high risk a team will claim him on waivers.

Why not ask the Packers how they feel about DeVito ???

Cripes, the guy wins 3 games, get injured and you all are ready to write him off as a non entity.

A glorious half Saturday of playing with below scrubs and WR's who will doubtful be on anyones roster in 2 weeks is a judge of his talent.

A coaching staff that certainly does not put him in position to succeed while "Mr. $40 million" does nothing but foul the air...incredible.  Most incredible was we had 3 games last year to get a better handle on him and as usual our HC crapped the bed and ran to a career OLD pedestrian qb of no notoriety.

Why not let him play with the 1's.  What have we got to lose  ??  Or is DJ drinking from the "I can make reads and quick correct decisions fountain" this week ??

Last time I saw him playing with the real 1's .... let's see .....oh yeah I remember...

When evaluating the line and skill players, it's often important to consider whether they are going up against the 1s, 2s, or 3s. After all, a WR might be able to beat a third-string CB but may struggle against a first-string caliber. The same goes for linemen: They might defeat a second-stringer but struggle with a first-stringer.

That said, I don't think the quarterback is nearly as impacted. Sure, they are going against 2s or 3s, but they are working with the 2s or the 3s, so it all evens out.

I think you're right, and I hope so, Ed but...whether he and they believe it at this moment, I'm not certain that it won't change, whether or not consciously, if the season starts badly. If the Jones effort fails due to poor performance or injury, I don't see why the Giants would see an advantage in adding some temporary fill-in QB when next year's QB Draft will be sugar-plumbing Tchaikovsky in their heads by early October.

Cheers!

Nate Peterman? He's one of the worst QBS in NFL history. Neither of these guys are any more than a 3rd/PS QB and I'd take Lock or Devito over both of them.
