Has there been solid reporting as to why no NFL team wanted to hire him as head coach?  I mean, actual reporting and not just conjecture?  I'd be curious as to why such an obviously qualified head coach, looking for a job, was unable to find a single team to give it to him?

Mike Lombardi is pretty close to Belichick.   His speculation seems to be pretty solid.   The issue for Belichick is that, historically, he ran everything with the Patriots.   So a GM that hires an HC like Belichick with fear of losing some of their power or potentially even their job.

There is also some speculation that Robert Kraft was exactly giving out glowing endorsements for the coach that won him so many Super Bowls.

I will add that Bill's age (early 70s) and recent poor records also contribute to this.  When an owner hires a new HC (or GM), they are selling the fan base on hope and the future (since their team is usually bad).   An old coach who likely will only work for a few seasons, which limits the whole "we just hired the future" pitch

I've never been overly impressed with the 33rd team, maybe it is just me.

I think it's important to note the author.  There are some really experienced NFL experts, but they also mix in some run-of-the-mill NFL pundits.
