Schoen seems weary of scouting QBs

I think Schoen understands when you are scouting QB's it simply means you don't have the position locked down and that in itself is not an ideal position to be in.

Blatantly "telling" him that you are looking for his replacement is something that I can't imagine any other GM in the league doing.

For those still working, how would you feel if your boss was looking for your replacement? And publicly stated he was doing so? The whole situation is being handled terribly. Total disregard for other's feelings is not an admirable trait for any leader.

How would you handle drafting a replacement for Jones if you were the GM?

I read his comment in that clip as meaning that it's nice when your QB situation is settled and your scouting and player evaluation can focus on other positions.  When you are potentially looking for a QB the importance of the position draws an out-sized focus and effort compared to other positions.
It's the title of the thread.

Quote from: MightyGiants on September 05, 2024, 09:28:54 AMIt's funny that even at the GM level, there are assumptions being made.  The Bears MAY be set at QB for the next 10 years, assuming that Caleb Williams pans out.  The Panthers thought they wouldn't have to consider QB for the next ten years when they drafted Bryce Young 1st overall.

That's why I said 2-3 years. I didn't mention ten years.

I doubt the Bears or any GM are thinking they are set for a decade with a rookie QB

Ask the Cards if they were set for 2 or 3 years after drafting QB Josh Rosen.

The reality is the team drafted a QB first overall, that's all that can be said with any sort of certainty.   Seems to me a smart GM wouldn't be ignoring their scouting of QBs because of that.

The reality is, if you draft a QB high in Rd1 you are going to see how it rolls for a couple of years.

That's not to say, the Bears, Panthers or anyone else will neglect to scout QBs, I never inferred that would be the case.

But if you think the Bears or any other team drafting a QB first overall are going to immediately prioritise scouting QBs, that's up to you.

A well run NFL organization shouldn't be "prioritizing" scouting of any position, in my opinion.   Prioritizing implies doing less for other positions.  A quality organization should prioritize scouting all players as well as possible regardless of position.  Admittedly teams will tend to spend more on players projected to go high, but even that has some issues (like missing on day 2 or 3 picks due to lack of quality scouting).

This is all especially true at this point in the scouting process when a single NFL game hasn't even been played and team needs are at best a weak projection.

Ok.

We better hope this '25 crop of QBs is good.

I get that, duh.  But I was talking about the underlying linked tweet, which didn't seem to suggest anything of the sort.  It was the 'weary' in the thread title I was questioning.
