If mahomes can play with in the preseason
Why can jones

And Mahomes wasn't coming off a long period of not playing due to injury.  Daboll thinks he is protecting guys from injury when what seems to be happening is he is protecting guys from playing well.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Beware the offensive coordinator who's never had a good offense without a top QB

If you think 4 drives in the preseason was going to magically make Jones not suck when he's sucked for the majority of his college and pro career...I mean... Might want to re-evalute some things. He was going to be bad no matter what they did because... He's a bad QB!

That's 100% on Daboll. He's lost some support from me and when he finds out, I'm sure it isn't going to sit well with him.  8))

Tim: No doubt about it. Among other members, I said before the preseason I thought he should play every minute of every preseason game. Knowing that was probably unreasonable (the team IS governed by what the doctors told them about his knee), I expected he would be asked to play at least one quarter of each of the three preseason games, but it didn't happen.  That move (or lack of a move) made no sense to me, and they paid for it yesterday.  Bob

The only difference taking every snap in the preseason would have made is we'd have seen him suck for 4 games now instead of 1. Guys...he's BAD. Like very very bad at playing football. No amount of preseason games was going to change that. If anything Devito needed the reps more.

Bob,

Feel free to file this in the Conspiracy Theory folder:

Schoen and Daboll knew what they were getting in Jones when they came to NY. Jones' limited skillset along with Mara's preference for him to be the QB of the future put them in a situation where they had to do what was best for the team to be successful while placating Mara's wish to keep Jones. Both of those desires did/do not align. Mara exerted indirect and undue pressure on Schoen to keep BOTH Barkley and Jones. We saw it in HK with Barkley leaving. I'm sure it was present and resulted in Jones getting a new contract. Daboll showed that he could run a basic, limited scheme with Jones and be somewhat successful. Mara was happy. Schoen and Daboll knew they messed up an opportunity to dump Jones.

As much as I wanted Jones to play much of the preseason, Schoen and Daboll didn't want to risk him getting hurt and triggering the injury clause AND extending Jones' time as the QB of the Giants. They wanted to be able to trot him out there for the world to see that he is not the guy to lead this team. The two biggest "reasons" given for Jones not playing to his potential were the offensive line and no #1 receiver. Both of those "reasons" were not apparent yesterday as the offensive line gave Jones time on multiple plays and Nabers is as advertised. Yet Jones floundered in spectacular fashion.

If Jones had gotten hurt in the preseason and couldn't play this year, he would be starting next year versus being dumped at the end of the season. Why? Because Mara needs to see with his own eyes that the line isn't an excuse anymore and that the lack of a #1 receiver isn't an excuse anymore.

They will continue to trot Jones out there and embarrass himself and us fans until they have enough ammo to go to Mara and say Jones is not the answer.

I watched Daboll's presser on the post-game.  Commented on You tube and will share it here.

New drinking game.  Everytime Daboll says:

"We have to be better"--drink once
"We have to go back and look at the tape"-- Drink twice.
"It starts with me, put it on me."--Drink Thrice.

I'm not as bothered as others about his nondescript post-game pressers. I want to see results on the field.

As TC said, "Talk is cheap. Play the game."

Tim: Interesting. I don't write it off, but believe the conspiracy angle could be dropped from your description and the rest of it could still be true. Bob

I read that the Giants played this game short players (not the full 53). Is this accurate ?. If so Daboll needs to be accountable for not being prepared for things like this.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Lenn: I think they only dressed 51 in the usual way.  Whether two others ultimately were included on the roster (officially) is confusing, at best.  Bob

Why would the Giants do that?...if nothing else we needed a punt returner because Slayton was a mess and should never ever have that responsibility again

If Daboll continues to trot Jones out there he will lose the locker room. The players always know who can play and who can't.
