Ronnie Barnes is the issue there. But also, they could have dressed another player, shoudl have had the kicker just in case, or at least someone else, no reason not to have an empty spot there.

I wish we knew exactly how the relationships within the Giants' organization worked. I'm not talking about power structure. I'm talking about who the allies are and which relationships are tense. I suspect there are cracks forming. The Daboll-Martindale rift may have been a glimpse into a larger issue.

Quote from: uconnjack8 on September 16, 2024, 09:57:11 AMIf the plan is to draft a QB this offseason then here is what I don't want:

They keep Daboll, draft a QB, the team stinks next year and they fire him.  Then a new HC and OC are brough in and the QB has to learn a new system.

Like others, I have a lot of questions with Daboll and Schoen at this point.  We'll see how things look in 4-6 weeks with the schedule getting more difficult.

That's a scary proposal. Remember that Jones was drafted to play in Shurmur's offense. Obviously there are reasons beyond that which got us to where we are now...but horses for courses is a real thing. I think I'd rather have head coach, offensive coordinator, and GM on the same page. But hey, it's an imperfect world.

I agree. No team would dress 2 kickers. Gillem was fine on the kickoffs. From what I read the Hammy injure is not the same injury that was bothering Gano plus it occurred while making a tackle on the kickoff (which I still have not seen as I was still in my car at the time so just going by what I read).

Hindsight is 20/20.

As long as you ignore that killer penalty where he failed to kick it far enough to set up Washington at their 40

For one week, how is an extra kicker with one hurting a bit worse than having the last player ranked on the roster who will never see the playing field?  A kicker needs to be 100% in all the right places in his body.

You don't think a rookie QB can benefit form someone like Nabers?

Nabers is the only reason the game yesterday was even competitive. He is the real deal.

Are they going to draft one?  The team will stunk and win a low amount of games whether Nabers is on it or not.  Same story as Barkley.  You need to build a team.

Wouldn't great players be part in building a team? I just do not understand the argument here

I agree with you.  I have seen some fans say you have to get the QB first before you get WRs, RBs and pretty much anything else.  On the other hand you have those that think you need to get as much in place as possible so the team can be competitive for the 4 years of the QBs rookie deal. The potential issue with that way is that if you have a very talented team will you be in position to draft a top QB?

I think it can work either way as well as some other ways if you have the right players and coaches.

Right now Nabers looks like a great pick to me.  If they draft a QB in 2025 he will come in with a stud WR in place and what looks like better blocking.  To me thats a better way to get a QB integrated into the NFL.

Even the dreck of the 1970s Giants after Tark somehow won a few games. Mattered little. They were a joke that eventually led to the Mara family feud. So what if Daboll pulls out an upset or two later, his team is dysfunctional and dumb. Its going nowhere in a league where coaching excellence shines fast-look at Sam Darnold and the Vikings yesterday. O'Connell had them whacking the stuffin out of the Niners an his qb reclamation looks damn good with his coaching.

and we get angry stare downs from Dumboll.

PS... And lets not forget Jim Boy with the Chargers too. Totally revitalized and now have direction after the ridiculous Staley years.

I would of fired him after the Jets game last year
The truth is you can't keep firing people
Let them draft a QB
Give him.a few years
For those thinking drafting a WR is a waste
Ddnt baker Mayfield game get better
And it might not last but Sam Donald is looking good

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold at their worst have always been better Qbs than Daniel Jones and their teams still let them go.

Well, Gano WAS on the injured list prior to the game. Whether he said he was fine or not, the medical staff was responsible for evaluating his situation, measuring his risk and providing Daboll the information he needed to make an "informed decision" regarding his kicker's availability AND durability during the game.

Gano suggesting he was "fine" was ultimately an irresponsible statement in that, although he may have kicked 49-yard FGs during warm-up, he certainly didn't practice his windsprints in trying to run down would-be returners attempting to score TDs. Bad on Gano for practically lying to the medical staff and his coaches.

That the medical staff signed off on Gano, without putting him through a full simulation of all potential activities of a kicker's job responsibility, is a failure of due diligence on their part. Their failure to do their job properly has, for all intent and purpose, ended Gano's career with the Giants (NOTE: same thing that happened to Ali Haji-Sheikh in 1985).

Brian Daboll knew that Gano was on the injured list during the week. At that point, Jude McAtamney should have been activated off the Practice Squad for insurance purposes and let him perform the kickoffs, at the very least. Instead, Daboll chose to ASSumme the risk of Gano in his as-is condition and, sure enough, the opening kickoff gets returned back, Gano does a number on that hamstring and all for naught (NOTE: penalty on the "Team Formerly Known as the Redskins"). The Scottish "Shanker," uh, I mean "Hammer," forgot to eat his bangers and mash and didn't prove up to the task as backup kicker. The rest, in the tradition of Keystone Kops Kapers, is more than what the rest of us here could handle. So, HERE is what is on Daboll:

1. Just like Parcells learned the hard way 40 years ago, Daboll is repeating the same sins that Bill went through with "The Sheikh."

2. Parcells listened to Ronnie back then about player hamstrings, got pi$$ed off and eventually canned every kicker, punter, WR or RB who had ongoing hamstring problems. Daboll now has Ronnie, and he STILL hasn't figured that out, yet (NOTE: Parcells - you need to talk to Daboll about the hamstring injuries and what to do with them!!!).

3. NEVER believe what the kicker TELLS you!!! NO talk, ALL kick!!!

Peace!

So if they aren't the answer who are the top 5 guys on your list for hc right now?

TERRIBLE KICKOFF!!!

EVEN WORSE PAT!!!

The Scottish "Clunker" must have forgotten to eat his bangers and mash yesterday because he couldn't place-kick the broad side of a barn!

As for nobody dressing two kickers, Jim Fassel absolutely had to back in the 2000 season when Brad Daluiso returned from his knee injury. He could kick FGs on the new Giants Stadium turf; however his kickoffs were agonizingly short. So, the Giants brought in Jaret Holmes to  do the kickoffs for a few games and I believe one or two games as the FG kicker as well. It helped preserve Daluiso's leg through the playoffs but the writing was on the wall that his career was likely done after the Super Bowl XXXV loss. The knee injury against the Cowboys in 1999 completely devastated his kicking leg and he'd never be the same again.

Unfortunately, I believe Gano may very well be along the same path as Daluiso. A great kicker, powerful and accurate leg, on pace to dethrone the legendary Pete Gogolak as the All-Time Giants' Scoring Leader, then an injury derails everything.

Just a sad and most unfortunate outcome for Gano whom I wanted badly to break the scoring record.

Now, will the Giants give Jude McAtamney his chance to be the guy?

Peace!
