I'm glad Shep is still in the league and wish him well. As for Saquon I expect he won't bring the value they hope. Very talented. He'll have a few highlight reel runs but he won't do much in the way of helping them win. I'm a 4 yards and a cloud of dust fan when it comes to a running game.

Barkley's last game was pretty much a prime example of what you are talking about

10 rushes 84 yards 8.4 yards/carry 59 longest run

That doesn't seem bad. However, when you subtract the 1 run for 59 yards, the rest of his 9 carries were for 25 yards, or 2.8 yards per carry.

Like you, I am not a big fan of the homerun-type RB.  I favor the more consistent producer.

I wish there were RB stats that gave us more texture.  In statistics there are 3 measures of central tendency.  Mean, median, and mode.  Mode, the one that happens most, doesn't seem to have much value here.  But median would be very enlightening.  Looking at median avoids the outsize influence of one outlier.  as in your Barkley example.  That's not to say an outlier can't have great value.  A 65 yd. TD run is a great thing.  But it doesn't sustain drives, enhance TOP, or wear down a defense.  One big run is great but it is not an effective running game.

I'd love to see someone compile distribution stats showing the % of runs in each of these ranges:

negative
0-3 yards
3-6 yards
6-10 yards
11-20 yards
21+ yards
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.
