Have injuries impacted DJ?

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 22, 2024, 02:49:59 PMIt's kind of funny.  Mike Lombardi (in his latest podcast) said if he was DJ's dad, he would be calling Daboll, wanting to know why he was trying to get his son killed with all those QB draws (the runs up the middle you were describing).

There have been runs where DJ failed to get the first down, where, to my eye, he would have picked up the first-down yardage in the past.  I don't think he's running scared, so to speak, I just don't think he's fully recovered from his ACL.  Despite his impressively quick return to action (a testament to his work ethic in rehab), the conventional wisdom seems to still hold that it takes at least a full year to fully recover.  Seeing how DJ tore his ACL in early November and didn't have surgery until late November, he has at least another month or so to get to the year mark (and hopefully full recovery, his new peak potential).

To my eye, DJ doesn't seem as fast or as quick to accelerate than he has in previous years.

I bet there is an impact in his running game from no longer having Barkley too.  Jones and Barkley showed their potential when both healthy in 2022.  Hard to sustain the load they carried that year though.  The offense took a different direction in 2023 maybe as effort to lighten the load or maybe for the same reason the last 2 games were different than the prior two (I still don't know what that reason is, but it hasn't worked out well for Jones).

Quote from: kingm56 on October 22, 2024, 10:29:36 PMYou're correct, Ric.  I conflated 2024 with 2023.  I provided the former numbers.  Thank you for the correction, and I never view providing accurate data as an attack; in fact, I appreciate it.

Bear in mind that in the disastrous 2023, Jones only had Barkley for 2 of the 5 games he played and Barley didn't do much in those games.

The other day I was poking around in my Giants library and ended up pulling video of Daniel Jones in his first couple of seasons.

What stood out to me most was that, compared to the Jones we see today, his younger self could fly past the front seven into the secondary as quick as a lightning bolt which, if we remember, accounted for many of his big runs early in his career. Surely, we all remember his long run against the Eagles where he tripped over his own two feet before he made it to the goal line for an 80+ yard run.

He's no longer that kid anymore, obviously. It's more complicated for him now with the knee and learning and unlearning multiple offensive systems since then. But between learning Daboll's system, trying to get the ball to receivers whom he struggles with accuracy, or drops his passes, it has become so difficult for him in that it almost looks like he is playing in thick mud while everyone else is on the fast track.

We've talked ad nauseum about why and I don't want to delve into it again. I just wanted to validate others' views that Jones has indeed slowed down since coming into the league.

Peace!

The lack of running speed is the most obvious and attributed mostly to the ACL.

There are few things we know for sure about Daniel Jones other than his 24-41-1 GBrec in 6 seasons to date despite having almost ideal size, speed and athleticism. Personally, I haven't noted a change in any of that nor in his lack of emotion, leadership, intensity, "spark".

Cheers!

I can't remember if he ever slid much, but seeing him go down the way he does every week scares the s*** out of me every time.

I wonder if the injury makes it harder for him to slide, or put him more at risk. Not really an area I know much about.

It's a Giants' tradition.  Eli was no good at sliding either.

I suspect with Jones, it's also an indicator of his drive, DESPERATION, and toughness.  He is trying his hardest to get every yard, even if it is ill-advised bigger picture (in terms of his health).

I like Daniel Jones and don't question his effort. And while I see little to suggest a post-injury issue, I see nothing about him that suggests leadership, command, or a take charge ability. No spark!

Am I wrong about that?

Cheers!

I concur with your assessment, Larry.  While I acknowledge I'm not privy to what occurs off the field, I've seen nothing in 8 years to suggest informal leadership abilities.  As you stated, he doesn't have that special spark.

Yeah! And for that reason, I can see him being benched once again against the Steelers on MNF  I truly wish I could feel otherwise, Matt.

Cheers!
