Seems to me the "good teams" draft QBs. Look at teams like GB and 49ers. GB had Brett Farve and still drafted Rodgers, then while Rodgers was on the roster, they drafted Love. 49ers Had Montana and still took Steve Young, and then took Jeff Garcia and Elvis Grbac. Took Alex Smith and while still on the roster they took Colin Kaepernack. Had Garroppolo and  and then drafted Trey Lance and then Perdy. Patriots were similar and KC to some degree.

The draft is an important tool to improve at every position on the team, yet some teams seem to be reluctant to draft QBs. These teams wait until the last minute, until they are desperate for a QB and when you wait until the last minute, things don't always go so well.

I have heard that this draft class as it pertains to the QB class "isnt very good". Well how do you really know? The 2021 draft was to be a good draft for QBs and look what happened.

It brings me to this upcoming draft. The Giants should take a flier on a QB in the 1st or 2nd round. Anything is better than what we have on our roster right now.

I have seen Quinn Ewers projected to the Giants and to me I say fine ( I would be happy with any QB drafted at this point) . I don't think we should stop there, perhaps draft one more in the 3rd round, Someone like Dart or Garrett Nussmeier. At the very least we would have two QBs on rookie salaries, and might find our future starter or a solid back up QB.

Getting a QB and RT would help turn things around. The Giants should always be willing to improve at every position, the Giants shouldnt wait until the last minute either. 2018 was the time for the Giants to have drafted a QB. Eli would have been here and the kid could have sat an entire year to learn.

Excellent post.

My only change would just me seeing RG as a bigger immeidate need than RT, otherwise I agree and appreciate this post and the thought put into it.

I do not believe in mid-round drafting of a QB who likely wont play and has to develop.  That pick could draft a starter at another position.  If you draft a QB, make it round 1.

Mid round QBs rarely become productive starters.

I don't know if that is quite the case.

Tim Brady, Brett Favre, Drew Brees to name a few of some of the better QBs of the last couple/few decades all were drafted after round one.  Rodgers was a late pick in round one.  I know we have some really good QBs playing that are 1st rounders.  I just wanted to point out some of the greats were not.

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

The Browns have tried this recipe and it's been a disaster for them.

Since 2000 they have had over 20 starting qbs for them and outside of Baker Mayfield they missed on every single one of them.

I do like the idea of keeping the QB pipeline flowing with a mid-round pick every couple of drafts. you never know who is going to become a star / franchise QB. I have no problem with letting that pick sit a couple of seasons to learn and grow into the position and become a leader. Not sure I would do it on a first rounder though unless there was a better than average chance they were going to pan out. Once you get an established guy in there then yes, by all means, look for the next QB to lead the team.
Now a days too many people seem worried about having to win while your QB is on his "Rookie Deal" and I think that is part of the problem. These kids don't get a chance to learn, develop and mature. They are rushed into being #1 and the majority of them aren't quite ready.
I think Green Bay is an excellent example, as Brownie pointed out. Even Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith for a season or two. I think that is a big help in a young QB's development.

What's your point?  Are you suggesting teams shouldn't draft QBs because of the Brown's failures?

@brownelvis54 - great write up.

The best teams draft the highest rated player on their Board at a position of need. Reaching to fill positional needs is a proven recipe for failure.

The KC Chiefs disagree with you, and all they've done is go to 6 strait AFC championship games and win 3 SBs.  Was QB a position of need when they drafted Mahomes?   What about the Packers?  Did they need a QB when they selected Rodgers or Love?

Giant Jim

It's not so easy to draft a QB from in any round. The Giants have only drafted 2 in their history that had decent careers, Phil Simms and Phillip Rivers. Simms and Eli Manning both took several years to develop. The Jets only drafted 1, but have had a few mediocre ones. (Ken O'Brien, Geno Smith, Richard Todd, Sam Darnold)

Don't use facts, facts are wrong and Jones is the greatest QB ever

George Young told him so

How do you know Mahomes wasn't the highest rated player on their Board? Positions carry a lot of grade weight with QB being the highest.

It wasn't just me that said that good drafting teams select the highest rated player on their Board. Bill Polian has said that many times as well as other GMs.

The Giants would have drafted Drake Maye. He's been terrible with the Patriots and couldn't beat out Brisette. Granted it's early but he hasn't shown a thing yet.

So if the Giants drafted Maye, there would be no Nabers as well as Nubin or Phillips. They would have a huge question mark at QB. But everyone would be happy because Jones is gone. Cautionary tale - just drafting a QB doesn't guarantee automatic success.

Todge continues to over-simplify the draft process. And then talks about a "recipe for disaster" as if the Giants haven't been a disaster for over a decade.

The very act of assigning player grades and developing a draft board is subjective. Who's to say that one team's draft board is correct and another's is incorrect.

Well for one, you didn't say BPA, you said BPA at a position of need. Now you are shifting from your original comments

You are also putting words in people's mouths again. No one said anything about Maye, I for one would not want Maye. But who is to say he wouldn't be good?

Also where do you get "he played terrible" from exactly?
