I am more concerned that the reporters ask him good questions and follow up when he gives a non-answer

I feel like our beat guys generally do a pretty decent job of this. I have seen them press Mara pretty hard and not let him off the hook with BS answers, so I can't imagine they'll have any issue doing it with someone who works for Mara.

I have watched press conferences on other teams (eg Tepper with the Carolina reporters), and they were a lot more tame than ours.

I watched it.  It was like a half hour, why I should keep my job sales pitch.

He kept harping on how young the team is

He pointed out that most of the losses were one score (rather than blowouts)

He said he believes they are ready to take a big step up next year

He believes in his process.

He admits to mistakes and that he had to change how he did some things (points to the learning curve as a new GM)

All in all, nothing earth-shattering in his presser

Will have A LOT more on Joe Schoen's presser in a story for

 that will likely run tomorrow morning. But a few quick takeaways:

• Schoen had no hesitation when asked if he expects to be back for a fourth season. When asked if he has been told he'll be back, he said he talks to ownership constantly and relayed that they have confidence in the plan.

• There was virtually no support of Daniel Jones, which would have been nearly impossible to do. I can't see any way he remains the starter after the bye.

• Schoen tried to sell hard the youth of the roster and that they're close based on the amount of close losses.

• Schoen said he believes the roster is good enough. That led to an obvious follow up if the problem is coaching. He spoke in generalities about the team's struggles, but that initial answer wouldn't make me feel great if I was Daboll.


To the point in bold, I am reminded of a story I think Mike Lombardi attributes to Bill Walsh-  While the head coach is slaving away working 18-hour days trying to create victories, the GM and the owner are having dinner and the GM tells the owner-  "I don't know why this team isn't winning, I gave the coach a good roster."

Thanks for the notes on the conference and the Duggan tweet. I intend to watch the full conference later, but all of this is helpful.

Sounds like Schoen is in full damage control/self-preservation mode. I will obviously want to watch it myself, but just going off your notes (which don't mention Jones) and going off Duggan's tweet, my instinct is to agree with Duggan's take that Jones is done at least for now, if not the season (and certainly as a Giant beyond this season).

It also sounds a little wishy-washy on Daboll. He could be the head that rolls if this season doesn't get better, although I am still of the view that the base case is that both men will keep their jobs. Admittedly, I feel much less strongly about that in Daboll's case than I do about Schoen's. If for no other reason that history has shown that Mara fires coaches more quickly than GMs, as do most owners.

Interesting thought, Ed. I will give my own two cents on this only after I have watched this presser, but I will say that I have felt at times that Schoen comes off as a bit of a slick politician type. I felt that way at times during Hard Knocks. So it's interesting to me that you brought this up.

I just finished watching Joe Schoen's presser.

He said they are 1-5 in one score games, so they have to play better, and that they are not that far off.

What scares me is he said they are going to figure out what they need to do to win these next seven games.

If by chance they do start to play better and win a few games, that is going to destroy their chances of getting the #1 pick in the draft.

I think realistically when your 2-8, at this point you're not making the playoffs, so just tank the season and please go and get the best player in the draft when you have the chance.

The last thing they need is to win some meaningless games and put them out of contention of securing the #1 pick, but that is my opinion.
