On Daboll and Jones ...

"What Daboll's calling, guys, people are open. They are ...first drive Malik Nabers gets open on a third down and Jones with a clean pocket air mails him. The Flea Flicker now you could field and you got Tyrone Tracy Jr., who by the way, is a very talented kid. He's good. Giants have some players who can catch it and run it and why are you calling for a Flea Flicker?

"Well, because it was going to work there were two guys on the route — they were both wide open and Jones held on to it held on to it and at the top of the screen I saw this live and if you watch the replay again if they show the replay of the All-22 you can see Daboll at the top of the screen kind of losing it.

"He's scheming 'em open, guys. They are open."[/i]

Ownership's feelings on Daboll ...

"They love Daboll. The owners love him. There's a lot to like about him. Certainly when you meet he's just like a regular dude ... Saban guy, Belicheck guy, the type of guy you want in New York."

He'll continue to scheme them open. The offense will be much-improved next year if they get the QB they want.

Interesting, wasn't the last guy the owners supposedly loved Daniel Jones?  Perhaps Joe Judge?

I like Rich Eisen and I like Brian Daboll and I certainly do not want to start this Whole Magilla (from the Yiddish word Megillah) all over again, but Rich MightyGiants makes a valid point. Don't bet the house on a commitment from the Mercurical Mr. Mara. I mean this with all due respect. In his position, you can't be stubborn when new facts present themselves.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

I'm sure they still love Jones. Despite his level of talent and play, the kid is tough, works as hard as anyone out there, and gives it all he has. His all may not be enough, but his work ethic, and effort have never been in question. On a personal level, he is a great person. Sadly it just never translated to on the field.

That narrative sounds strikingly similar to the narrative that you posted about Brian Daboll.  On a personal side a great guy, but he hasn't produced on the field

Daboll came in with a much better history of working with young talented QBs. Judge was a STC recommended by Lil Bill. Daboll showed what he was capable of in his first year. The two are not the same.

Additionally, Mara is well aware of how he's viewed around the league. Can you imagine the hit his reputation would take if he fired Daboll after publicly offering his support? Four coaches for Jones, who would still be under contract. The message would be sent that Daboll was wrong about Jones so he had to go. What reputable coach would want to come in to work for Mara knowing that he's not a man of his word?

There's only one way, IMHO, that Daboll is gone after this year: he has to lose the team. Anything short of that... he's our coach next year.

Ed,

Your comments reminded me of this from insider Schefter:

Quote"I don't know that anybody can say that anybody is safe in New York," Schefter said during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. "I don't know that anybody can say that anybody is safe when you're on track to have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft."

Schefter points out that Mara provided a similar vote of confidence for Ben McAdoo in 2017 before firing him, and then again with Joe Judge in 2021 before firing him.

Ultimately, all options are likely to be on the table if the team's ugly season continues.

"I think they're going to be looking at everything (this offseason) and I think anything is possible," Schefter said.

Sure, one could say that. I may disagree on the latter, but I like to keep an open mind, and can understand why some who views may differ, may think differently about it, and I can understand and appreciate the perspective. It is just not one I share.

We are 2-8, and he will have to shoulder his portion of that as HC. But the team  has up to this point not quit, has been competitive in all but 2 games, and as a play caller, has wide open receivers on a near weekly basis to the point it is almost expected. The ground game is also coming to life on what is starting to look like a home run draft choice in Tracy is is playing excellent football right now. Receivers are open, Tracy is running well, OL is doing what it can minus AT, and overall doing solid, Theo has flashed a bit, it seems most positions are doing well. These are some of the reasons why I disagree that Daboll has not been productive. However, I will reiterate, he is not blameless for the 2-8 start. I do not pin everything on any one player or person, it's just that each issue has a different level of severity. With better QB play we are at worst 7-3 right now if not 8-2

I don't disagree with this, while I think they should stay, on paper, an argument can be made to start over again.

But at the same time, anything being possible, like it or not, also include them staying, does it not?

I am not in the prediction business.   As I mentioned, I was talking to my friend who supports the Raiders.   He asked me if the Giants would fire Daboll; I put that possibility at 50/50.   GMs tend to have twice the shelf life of head coaches, so I would say the odds of Schoen being fired are less than the ones I gave to Daboll.  Again, not in the prediction business, but that was my best speculation.

The question you ignore, is not asking for a prediction. Anything being possible, includes them staying put as one of several potential options or outcomes, am I wrong?

Sorry, I thought saying it's 50/50 Daboll is fired implies it's possible he stays

Owners loving him is a vote of confidence vis a vis his job.  But given the owner's judgement and track record, it doesn't give me, as a fan, the warm fuzzies.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

If Rich Eisen is right, and why otherwise would he have said it, it simply confirms what I have heard about how well liked and respected Brian Daboll is throughout the League.

Even so, it's distressing to have had to wonder what has happened since in their first season together, Daniel Jones had a winning record including a Playoffs win. and with Daboll named COTY, followed since by just 3 wins in his next 16 starts.

I suppose we will never know- perhaps neither will they- but I can't help but wonder if DJ didn't wilt or freeze under the pressure of expectation from his big new $160 million (up to $195 million with incentives and escalators) contract? Has he become $ blind? Whatever and however, it's really sad.

Cheers!
