The latest draft order and why 2nd overall was meaningless

MightyGiants

This is why I objected to the idea that the Giants were 2nd in the overall draft order, due to the bye.  No game played and they dropped back to 5th

So here is the latest top of the draft, among teams with three wins or fewer:

1. Jaguars, 2-9

2. Titans, 2-8

3. Browns, 2-8

4. Raiders, 2-8

5. Giants, 2-8

6. Patriots, 3-8

7. Jets, 3-8

8. Panthers, 3-7

9. Cowboys, 3-6

(The Titans, Browns, and Raiders have the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker over the Giants, which is why they're ahead of them. Might the Giants have to offer a huge haul to trade up to No. 1?)

The answer is evident in terms of QB value in the upcoming draft. Now, in terms of the best Left Offensive Tackle, I think you have a much better discussion topic at pick #5.

Also, if there are suitors for pick #5 lining up, would you consider moving out of it for a 2026 #1 and move down the board with your new 2025 #1, and additional picks?

The latter two scenarios at #5 seem far more realistic. You're not seriously trading up in April 2025, are you?

Peace!

Mighty,

When I posted the link I said it was what they were "at that time", not what they would be, big difference.

Right now the Giants currently have the 5th spot, but we don't know what they will have until after the season is finished.

It could be higher or it could be lower, we will just have to wait and see.

By that same token, with 7 games left to play and the SOS changing by the week, isn't this current status of 5th overall just as meaningless?

Projecting trade scenarios when the draft position isn't set is way too early. Trying to get a jump on it now does nothing. And even when the draft is set, we'll all still get it wrong!  :surrender:

Where they are right now is meaningless with games still to play.

It's amazing that even when Dallas stinks they come out on top!...there is no way they should be ranked so horribly after being so good the past few years

Correct me if I am wrong but the SoS tiebreaker means if you played a weaker schedule it benefits you in the draft since you are a worse team than that team with the same record right? This makes sense as the worse needs more help in the draft. But compared to other years our schedule isn't really that tough. With Cowboys heading to double digit losses, the Browns, Panthers, Bengals, Saints, Colts how are there 3 teams with worse schedules!? This is so  ~X(

You are correct in that it is way too early to be thinking about their current position.  Especially since some have played 10 games and some have played 11.  All you can do right now is hope teams with say 4 wins or less find a way to win a few while the Giants continue to stack the L's.  As far as the competition, the Raiders and Browns are bad, really bad and unless they are playing each other could easily lose-out.  The Jaguars are bad, but 1) they are not looking for a QB and 2) if Lawrence comes back should win 2-3 more.  The other team to keep an eye out is D*ll*s.  They are another team that could lose-out.  They just looked disinterested last night and Cooper Rush is as bad as Jones.

The one thing to consider, the Raiders and Jags staffs are coaching for their jobs.

That's clearly not the case for the Giants.

It sounds like the Jags HC (after that disaster game against Detroit) is a dead man walking (a lot of predictions he is fired this week).  I can't imagine there is anything Antonio Pierce can do to save his job, either.

Probably not. But he's certainly going to try.

Either way, a new coach will come with a change of atmosphere and they might reel off some games - see the Saints this season, the Raiders last year etc.

This reminds me of something Mike Lombardi pointed out when Pierce was hired as the next Raiders HC.  He pointed out the job of an interim HC is different from that of a permanent HC.  With interim, they usually just take over an existing coaching staff.  So they just need to oversee the coaching staff and game planning and motivate a team that often has lost their motivation (and getting a natural boost if you replace an unpopular HC).  When you are a permanent HC, you need to assemble staff, be involved in team building, and develop your team's offensive and defensive overarching philosophies.

I'd be disappointed if they fire Pierce after his first season.

No QB, traded Devante, no RB, idk he hasn't had anything to work with.

That's not what I am reading. Daboll has to show something these final 7 games.

QuoteFox Sports' Jordan Schultz reports, "While ownership has suggested he'll return, there is a growing sense that Giants HC Brian Daboll is coaching for his job over the final seven games."
This belief supposedly led to Daboll naming Tommy DeVito the starter over Drew Lock. A two-year vet of Daboll's offensive system, it would seem Daboll is hoping DeVito's familiarity with the system can lead to a strong run down the stretch and his return in 2025 for what will undoubtedly be an offseason full of changes. Daboll started off strong out of the gate, going 9-7-1 in his first season at the helm. He managed just six wins last season and is currently sitting on two wins through the first 11 weeks of this year. He'll look to turn things around starting in Week 12 against the Buccaneers, but Daboll may not be long for the Giants if he can't string together a few wins and end the year on a high note during the final months of the season.

Where exactly is this sense growing??? That's what I'd like to know.

There was a sense that Jones only needed better protection and a true #1 WR to show what he's capable of.
