You said he is a journeyman QB, but actually a journeyman QB consistently plays on a one-year deal.

I brought up Baker Mayfield several times now, but you continue to ignore that fact because it refutes what you are trying to promote.

Here is Mayfield's deal, he signed a 3 year 100-million-dollar contract, that isn't a journeyman.

Furthermore, these are Sam Darnold's projected numbers, as I'll repost them again.

67% 4182 Yards 33 TD 14 Int 102.5 RTG

He's 27 years old in the prime of his career, he's going to be getting a nice size contract, which won't be a journeyman type deal.

So, at the end of the year, let's see what kind of contract Sam Darnold receives and how many years its for, and if he's just a journeyman as you claim?

Then we will see who is really confused.

Unless the Vikings determine that JJ McCarthy is a bust  without him taking the field, does it make sense to tie up a huge contract in a veteran QB and strangle their Cap? Why do you think they signed DJ? They want to kick the tires and see if he can backup JJ. Darnold is going to want to start with a team and not be a transition QB. If he can get the Vikings deep in the playoffs, maybe he will stick with a team on a Mayfield two year out deal. I expect this years draft to have at least four first round QBs regardless of talent. The QB contracts are ridiculous and teams want to draft QBs for the advantage of the four year rookie deal.

Hi Ed,

You make some sound points, and things can transpire exactly as you have stated, so the possibility is definitely there.

I have the following four possibilities presented to add what you have stated.

A) JJ has already been injured regarding his knee, if there is a setback during training camp or in the offseason, they may want Darnold back.

B) If they re-sign Darnold, they may want JJ to sit behind him for a year and re-learn before they make the transition.

C) Daniel Jones may have gone to the Vikings just to pick their brain and to learn from a winning franchise, then use that knowledge and sign with a team who is looking for a starter.

D) If the Vikings don't offer Daniel enough money as a backup, then he may leave as well.

However, these are only possibilities.

I can also see Darnold wanting to capitalize on his big year and sign a nice sized contract somewhere else.

I can also see Daniel Jones re-signing with the Vikings as their backup.

I'm just not going to make a conclusive statement on how this will transpire, so we will just wait and see.

If I were Jones with all of the money he's made thus far, I'd be focused on resurrecting my career and not so worried about my contract.

I'm not saying he should give his services away, but he's in no position to demand much more than an above average back-up.

From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

Quote from: Philosophers on December 05, 2024, 10:39:51 AMYou missed my point.  Shula was more player friendly and encouraging.  Parcells coached by getting in player's faces, ridiculing them and getting under their skin.  People respond differently to different types of coaching.  Some embrace one and lose their confidence in others.

It's funny, but before he coached Miami, Shula was even worse than Parcells at Baltimore when he had the pressure of the owner, Rosenbloom, square on his back after losing Super Bowl III. But even in his early years in Miami, he was, as Larry Csonka later observed, his behavior was very "Tom Coughlin-like."

I understand he had mellowed out by the time Marino came into the picture. But he was smart enough to understand he now had a weapon at QB and he had no choice but to "transform" from a run-oriented offense to a pass-oriented. Then, again, having a Mark Clayon, Mark Duper and a Nat Moore as your main receivers, I don't think Coach Shula had any issue making that conversion; hence, your "more player friendly and encouraging" may have been the case in Shula's back end of his coaching career. But there's no question he broke into the league a hard a$$ in the line of a Parcells or Coughlin.

Peace!

Hi Ed,

I saw that Darnold threw 5 TD passes yesterday.

His projected totals are now 4300 yards 37 TD 13 Int 68% and a 108 RTG.

I checked the market value tracker for him, and it jumped a bit to a 4 year deal, valued at 34 million per year.

The Vikings are one of the best teams in the NFL, and I just thought of another scenario.

What happens if Minnesota ends up either making the Super Bowl, or actually ends up winning the whole thing.

I would think more than a few Viking fans would want Darnold brought back and re-signed, because how do you just let a Super Bowl winning QB leave.

However if they do let him go, the pressure that would be put on JJ McCarthy would be tremendous, as he would have to live up to what Darnold brought to the table.

We will have to see what they do, and I guess it's a good problem to have if you're a Vikings fan.

If they go that way and tie up their Cap in a QB, then JJ goes the way of The Packers. It didn't seem to hurt Rodgers or Love.

Although don't be surprised if Darnold is the starting QB for the NYG's next season.

Them winning the super bowl this year, is about the only possible scenario in which I see them resigning him to a deal. Anything short of that and he is gone for sure.

Hi Ed,

So your saying JJ sits behind Darnold for a few seasons if they re-sign him?

I think that would be a smart move by Minnesota, I'd keep both QBs on the roster if I could.

Now as to your scenario of Darnold signing with the Giants, I'd like that move if they can't draft Sanders this year.

That would work. They could sign him to a DJ/Mayfield contract where the third year could be a dead cap of 15-20 million and then decide to start JJ and trade Darnold or cut him, or trade JJ.

If they draft well, then carrying that Darnold Salary won't kill them. The goal would be to stay competitive year in and year out.

Its in interesting situation in Minny.  The way it looks now, Vikings will get the 5th seed and play the winner of either the NFC West or South.  I could definitely see them winning a game on the road against either of those division winners.  After that who knows.

Not sure what their ownership is like.  Just seems like risky business to let Darnold just walk and risk a big step backward with JJ or another vet.  If JJ is expected to be ready prior to camp, its a bit different than if they have to plan for that not to be the case.
