At least Bobby Bonilla has finally lost the distinction of worst contract ever given by the Mets

Soto is the real deal. If he stays healthy, he will most likely opt out of the contract after 5 years. I don't necessarily see this as a true 15 year commitment, although the Mets can counter his opt-out by raising his salary for the last 10 years if they choose. Regardless, I'm very excited as a Mets fan. We've never had a player quite like this and we get his prime years.

Exactly right, Doc.

Most players hit free agency around age 30. This is a rare thing to get an elite superstar of this caliber at 26 on a long term deal. Sure, it's a lot of money, but that is really not the fans' concern in this sport when you have an owner with the bottomless pit of resources Cohen has plus the willingness to pay the luxury tax that he does.

The Yankees had an offer to him that was a negligible difference (760 over 16 versus 765 over 15). Seems he simply wanted to come to the Mets. I appreciate that that reality is a source of consternation to Yankees fans, but it's the exact opposite for Mets fans, who have had their share of suffering over the years.

I'd like to see the Mets hang on to Alonso. I realize this is far from a given, but I'd love to see it. He was a huge part of that postseason run and has generally been a very good Met.

With that said, pitching is probably an even bigger priority at this point. I'd rather they shore up the rotation than retain Alonso, if I had to pick one versus the other. Hopefully it's not an either or thing.

Either way, it's an exciting time to be a Mets fan. Cohen isn't going anywhere, and neither are his resources or his burning desire to win at all costs. I miss the Wilpons about as much as I miss the brutal head cold I just kicked.

Or is it just because you're salty he's left for the Mets?

One of the reasons people do not like the Yankees.  The world is supposed to revolve around them and when it doesn't, it's a disgrace,

As an aside, have the Mets, in the history of their franchise, ever signed a player that the Yankees wanted to keep?  I cannot think of any.

The Athletic reported that Soto felt more comfortable with Steve Cohen than with Hal Steinbrenner. It's been a long time coming for the Mets after the Wilpon years.

I've read that the Mets want to use Vientos at 1st base.  They have a few options at 3rd between Baty, Mauricio plus some veterans

Baty has been beyond terrible despite having a number of fair chances. Hard to get excited about him as a viable option at this point. Maybe he'll figure it out at some point but I'm not brimming with optimism.

Steans said today that he wants to use Vientos at third. 1:44 below:

Perhaps if they can't re-sign Alonso at a price they're comfortable with they'll explore Vientos with first. I suspect the Mets want to keep Alonso but aren't willing to go above a certain number for him, which I think is smart. The Yankees are surely smarting about this Soto thing and may want to try to get the Mets back by poaching Alonso on an overpay. So I guess I could see the Vientos at first thing happening.

What does it say about the economics of baseball compared to other sports when a team from Chicago can't afford a young cost controlled starter and isn't even trying to compete next season. There is no Arch Manning in amateur baseball to punt 2025 for in 2026.

It is widely considered the worst deal in the history of the franchise - if not sports in general.

Again, if you understood time value of money, you would realize Bonilla got ripped off.
