Quote from: MightyGiants on December 12, 2024, 11:33:07 AMMike Lombardi and Matt Patricia suggest that when players' pad levels start to rise as the season progresses, it's a sign of a team not practicing enough or practicing correctly.

Failure of form while tackling is an indication of a coaching staff who hasn't spent enough time teaching and drilling.
I remember Joe Judge yapping about teaching them to tackle correctly.  That worked.

Quote from: coggs on December 12, 2024, 12:47:06 PMwhen are you going to give it up about these last few games meaning anything?

When you start to appreciate that the games haven't had meaning since before Halloween, and that such a state of affairs is bad ;)

Quote from: Woody on December 12, 2024, 12:39:20 PMThey don't wear pads like they used to. everyone has these small shoulder pads that really don't protect them much.  Look at difference between now and the late 90's and early 2000's.  and defenders can't lead with helmet now ...so if they go low and miss legs and hit above the waist they will be called for spearing or whatever...too many rules and new techniques for tackling safety.

Then why are other top defenses able to stop a runner or receiver within the same modern rules but we can't? Talent or coaching? There is nothing in the shoulder pads that prevented 11 guys from stopping a Saints runner, who's momentum was stalled at the 10 yard line, to keep pushing through and scoring. One of the most embarassing displays of lack of defense I have ever seen in all my years of watching football.

totally agree

Did you see the Eagles - Ravens game?  DBs taking down Henry with form tackles.  One of the best displays of tackling I can remember in recent times.

I agree pads are just part of problem in my opinion.     form tackling is the key and nobody on the Giants coaching staff insists that the players do it. That play was a total lack of effort and will to stop the runner , no question.
And a business decision by a few.

What was the business decision? Not play hard enough so they will cut me and I can latch onto a better team next season?

For some, maybe, for others under contract for another year?  See Banks lack of effort.   But they won't cut him.
Rookies and guys off the street will play harder to get a job.
Nature of the football business game.
Players know it

I accepted that before Rosh Hashanna.  At this point, I would rather go 2-15 then 6-11.

I may not have given enough thought to form tackling as compared to regime change to feel confident to ignore the .5 in a 43.5 O/U especially with DeVito running the NFL's 2nd worse Offense. What the hell, I just can't see betting the Over.

Cheers!

Quote from: TDToomer on December 12, 2024, 09:27:21 AMYou notice that too? It was the same tackling issues under Wink as well. Why aren't they coached to tackle with their arms and instead dive with their shoulders praying it will slow the runner down?

Tackling is a problem throughout football. The aim of every game is to win, period. There are no style points given out to do so. The players WILLINGLY play a violent game, with full knowledge of the potential consequences. We have been told over and over again that football is a business. Players are assets(contracts are considered assets in accounting). When you are in direct competition with another business having that other business have non-performing assets helps you win. If I owned the Giants one of the criteria for drafting players would be what is this player's level of "meaness". If that can be measured Let's put it another way. I would have along with position coaches Butkus coaching LB's, Tatum(The Assassin) coaching DB's, Deacon Jones coaching DL, and Conrad Dobler on the OL. You get the picture. I consider the Tush Push an insult to any defense, it pisses me off. Players should take it personally. I've heard retired players talk about the violence that goes unseen in piles. What do you think a twisting finger of a 330lb DL would do to one of Hurts' nostrils? Football is nothing more than a civilized Coliseum. Football players have been referred to as gladiators. I'm just expressing the "Roman" in all of us. No one wants to hit anymore. Flags are thrown for whispering at QB's. I say f$ck it, stop the BS. It's moving towards changing the game to flag football, or two hand touch.
