Looking back, and playing Thursday morning QB, was drafting Nabors a mistake? Is he just another in a line of shiny hood ornaments when e need the motor is a much bigger way.

I know the story back then, give Jones someone who can be a legit #1 WR  and he will respond. He didn't and we pay the price, so again knowing what we know now, who might we have drafted instead, or stay with Nabors?

Yes, as I and many others said at the time.

You can't win without a QB.

Not if we land a competent quarterback in this draft. He's put up really good numbers playing with a trio of backups. With a real quarterback the sky is the limit. All it did was delay the franchise by a year. I can live with that.

Lenny, have you been hiding under a rock the past year?

Certainly not. They were NOT Drafting a QB last year, so let's not start diminishing what was clearly an above-average-graded 1 through 6 Draft this year.

Round 1, No.  6  Malik Nabers- WR, LSU
Round 2, No.  47  Tyler Nubin-  S, Minnesota
Round 3, No.  70  Dru Phillips- CB, Kentucky
Round 4, No. 107  Theo Johnson- TE, Penn State
Round 5, No. 166  Tyrone Tracy- RB, Purdue
Round 6, No. 183  Darius Muasau-LB, UCLA

Now, with ample cap space and a lot more in 2026, they will add a vet QB as bridge/backup to either Sanders or Ward in the Draft along with an essentially 1st Round graded OT and a couple of top-50/top-100 graded players at CB and WR2 and then maybe a DT and another OL, etc.

So, let's look forward and throttle back on the backside whining. Hmm?

Cheers!

Nabers is a great emerging WR. Feels like a BPA selection.  If we draft a top 10-12 NFL QB for 2025 season in 2025 then drafting Nabers was smart.  If we draft a non-QB or a subperforming QB then it was a monumental mistake as Bo, Penix and JJ show (at least to me) some good promise as an NFL QB.

If Giants draft Travis Hunter then say a Jalen Milroe or Dart and they both do well in 2025 for Giants then Nabers, Hunter and QB were really smart picks.

It all depends on result of this year's draft.

In the sense that they should have drafted a QB, yes. But not as a draft choice, no. He's already the team's best player after Dexter Lawrence and he should be star in the league for years if he stays healthy.

This. But you just don't win games with a talented wide receiver without the QB. There are many around the league and many were not top ten picks. The search for a QB is just too elusive. When you need one, and the Giants certainly did in last year's draft, you better take one. So now they must hope that the offerings in the 2025 draft supply that QB and are on the par of what they could have grabbed in 2024. Or the talented WR turns into a needy diva quickly.

Painter you were right and after year one the draft looks good but the team looks horrific with little hope despite some promising rookies. Maybe the worst Giants team ever. As a result that decision might doom the dynamic duo. We shall see how the brilliant mind of Giant management works. The track record is abysmal. Now they must be reactive rather than proactive. Not the best position to work from.

Not a mistake

We can armchair GM all we want, they like Daniels, and tried to trade up with NE as well for a QB, they didn't get the guys they liked and didn't force need. Nix is good, but players are not universal remotes, they aren't going to operate anywhere or with anything. When you put square pegs in round holes or vice versa, is when mistakes are made.

I am suprised this is even a question, considering how many say the QB needs support, pillars, OL, receivers etc to succeed.

Nabers will be a fine target for the next QB.

B1GBLUE

im not sure it was a mistake, as he is a very talented player. but you can certainly make the argument its kind of another barkley pick. did we get better as a team? no. are we the worst team in the league again? yes. i'm not saying he was single handedly going to win us games, and he will be a huge asset going forward. so its kinda 50/50

MightyGiants

It really comes down to this:

Even the Giants front office recognized the need for a QB before the draft.

The Giants had three QBs on the board-  JJ, Penix, and Bo Nix

The Giants passed on all three QBs in favor of Nabers.  The book on Nabers was he was very talented but there were concerns about his character and maturity.

Now if one of those three QBs proves to be a franchise QB, it would be objectively a mistake for the Giants to pass on Nabers.

I will dispel one false notion.  The Giants never drafted Nabers for Jones.  At that point, we all saw on Hard Knocks the team didn't consider Jones their QB of the future.

Interestingly enough, I don't think you can say it was a strategic mistake, but rather a scouting mistake if they passed on a franchise QB.

Although, in all fairness, the Giants weren't and still are not in a position where QBs who play for this team will shine thanks to great support in scheme/play-calling/coaching, protection, and weapons to throw to.

In theory, drafting Nabers improved the support somewhat, but as we have witnessed from multiple QBs, Nabers hasn't exactly been a game-changer, at least not yet.

There's a window of great seasons for players of certain positions. For Wide Receiver, it depends on injuries. I put that window for WR's at 3-5 great seasons. Some transcend that, like a Randy Moss. Go look at the thread I put up of the five Greatest Giants Receivers. Odell had four great seasons. Toomer had 5, Burress 5, Nicks 2, and Cruz 3 in a short career. Some had them consecutively, while others throughout injuries that effected seasons or team issues.

This was a wasted season for Nabors. He also had several lingering injury issues.

Some of Toomer's prime seasons were wasted because of a developing QB or a bad supporting cast.

It was a bad decision not to draft a QB last season. Even if they draft a QB next season, the team is still at least a year away from being a solid playoff team. All of Odell's years here were wasted. His contributions were meaningless, as he was surrounded by a bad team with a bad Oline, Defense and aging QB.

The same can be said about the drafting of Barkley. At the time I was against it and despite how good he was and is, picking him at number two in a QB heavy draft where three, maybe four, of the five QBs drafted will be franchise or better QBs was a monumental mistake. Thinking Barkley would help an aging Manning was the height of stupidity. You build teams with the lines and QB. Not with running back and wide receivers.
