Let me start by saying, I don't see a QB in this years draft worthy of a top ten pick, nor do I value any near the top of the second round.

The better rejuvenated QB's, Darnold and Mayfield, players good enough for QB not to be an issue, are not available. The rest of the FA QBs are at best high risk.

Here is a version of what Pittsburgh executed this season designed to shore up a weakness and focus on the team strengths.

I would make a strong inquiry into Malik Willis back up at GB and then sign Fields. If you can get them both and have them compete for the job, we could at minimum establish a bridge long enough to build enough trade able assets to make a run at a top QB in the twenty six draft.

Best case, one of them, my money is on Willis, takes the job and doesn't look back.

I believe this leaves enough solid draft picks and dollars under the cap to continue rebuilding the roster, and/or especially if we can lose this weekend, trade back and gather more assets for this year and next.

Just an idea in the face of pretty limited options.

Malik Willis to someone I had forgotten about.  Cannon for an arm and very mobile but I dont believe he ever got his arms around the need to process mentally the speed of the NFL game.  Maybe a different teacher could help him.

Fields is good enough for sure as a bridge.  I've been advocating for him.  Mobile and with Nabers maybe he improves.

uconnjack8

What qualifies as a bridge?  I just don't understand the term as it seems people use it differently.  Is Drew Lock not a bridge?  Seems like there is a plenty of QBs in the NFL that are not good enough to be quality starters but only some of them are considered a "bridge".

andrew_nyGiants

My definition of a bridge in this example is a QB who can make all the throws, make plays with their legs as necessary, and in total is not the reason we lose games. Until we're able to identify and acquire a QB who we're confident can WIN GAMES for the team.

Bridge QB = nominally priced athlete who provides approximately an "average" performance (+/-) until such time a "franchise QB," whose upside potential exceeds/far exceeds the "Bridge QB," is attained.

Peace!

I would spend a third or fourth on Willis as he's being tutored by Matt LaFleur and actually won a few games this year while Love was out.

I think he could start again in this league.

What do you think it would take to get the Packers to part ways with their high-end and cheap backup QB?  If I were the Packer's GM, I would keep Willis unless someone offered me a king's ransom for him.  A backup QB is pretty important, especially to contenders like the Packers.

Rich,

The way I see it GB spent a seventh to acquire Willis from the Titans, so a third or even fourth rounder would bring them a nice ROI.

Combine that with the fact that they actually have a  HC in LaFleur who can actually develop projects and I could see this as an attractive option for them.

If we are looking to rejuvinate a QB who has potential but struggled in his career, there is this guy named Daniel Jones you might have heard of ?   /sarcasm/

andrew_nyGiants

Rick,

As an OSU fan, I really like Howard. It may be that his value is diminished because he has first round NFL talent at every skill position all around him.

Still he'd easily be worth a fifth round pick for a coach who enjoys developing talent.

andrew_nyGiants

Leek,

Willis has far better arm talent than Jones and more importantly he's not afraid to through down field.

Please don't misinterpret rejuvenation from Project. The former means rediscovering talent that has always been there, project means looking hard to try and find it in the first place.

Andrew,

Would the player the Packers drafted with an extra 3rd or 4th-round pick contribute as much as a cheap backup QB who is good enough to win games when the starter can't go?

andrew_nyGiants

Rich,

I don't pretend to know what the Packers QB plan is. For all I know they want to keep Willis. But I'm guessing Willis is looking for an opportunity to start again.

I don't have any idea if GB would use the third or fourth round pick to grab a back-up That would seem to be counterproductive to their ROI from the deal.

I don't believe they're in a position to demand a Kings Ransom for a back up who won two games and is looking for a starting role.

My point is if we're looking for options, perhaps this could be a good one. Obviously nothing is definitive. Just trying to provoke some ideas.

They are under no obligation to move him.  He is a very inexpensive capable back-up at this point, so I dont see why they would move him.
