Quote from: DaveBrown74 on January 05, 2025, 05:08:52 PMDifferent, equally treated records every time they change the number of games? That begins to get a bit messy, no?
Years from now when we're all gone, I don't think anyone will care about 16 game records any more than fans today care about 14 game records.

Maybe, maybe not.

Which record is more impressive? OJ's or ED's?

Quote from: T200 on January 05, 2025, 05:22:13 PMPossibly. But it's the only fair way to do it.

If a record is set in 14 games, it should not be erased in 16 games.

If they're going to do that, then take the average over those 14 games and add it to make a 16-game total.
Also, categorize track and field records based on the quality of shoes they had access to in their era. J/k, but seriously, it's all part of how sports progresses. Some records become less likely to be broken and others become more likely to be broken. There's no point complaining about it. These discussions already took place by the powers that be before they made their decisions.

No complaints here. Just a discussion.

The powers that be don't care about player records. They care about setting their own monetary records.

Hard to say. OJ had a higher yards per carry than Dickerson (so did Barkley). But at the end of the day, are you more impressed by a sprint or a marathon? There is something to be said about maintaining a feat over a longer period of time. Dickerson performed at a high level for 16 games. OJ probably would've performed at a high level for two additional games. But the more games you ask an athlete to compete in, the more wear and tear (and injuries) become an issue. That's part of the reason why I'm not a fan of the "load management" philosophy.

You mentioned track and field. There are categories and records for distance.

Shouldn't be hard to have separate records for 14, 16, 17, and future 18-game seasons.

2000 yards in 14 games is far more impressive to me than 2000 in 16.

As long as they have separate records for shoe quality. Not fair that modern shoe wearing athletes can break records set by Jim Thorpe.

That's a whole different rabbit hole 😆

Agreed. And in the very distant future they probably won't care about 17 game records any more than they do 20 game records.

And so on.
