I see Spags in the mold of great coordinators and mediocre HCs.

I just looked it up...  Damn!  Spags is old; he's 65.  Not much of a market for unproven HCs at that age.  It's possible that Spags has learned some things and grown emotionally since last he was a head coach.  Unfortunately for him, I doubt he will get to prove it (although you never know; look at Bruce Arians).

If Spags is old, what does it make me?   :o  :scared:

I love him but his bread and butter is as a DC. Jim Johnson, Monty Kiffin, Dave Wannstedt, Buddy Ryan, Rex Ryan... those guys were excellent defensive minds. Spags is right there with them.

The mastermind behind the chiefs defense and the real unsung reason the Chiefs have won as many games/Super Bowls as they have.
Ain't nothing to it but to do it!

I'm dating myself, but the first recollection I have of someone who fits this description is Phil Bengston. When Lombardi stepped down as HC/GBP he anointed his longtime DC as his successor.  Mediocre record over the next 3 years

He had a bad stint that ended 14 years ago with the Rams. That's a long time ago and a lot of success since. He deserves another chance and 65 ain't that old.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

"Mediocre" head coach might be generous.

Very good if not excellent coordinator though for sure. Just not a head coach. Not the first guy who fits this description.
