In our haste to find a QB it seems we are willing to rationalize almost anyone in the hope we find someone who can play the position.

One thing I have noticed a lot this season are "pushers" of the football — QBs who seem to guide their throws rather than rear back and sling it with confidence.

Given the tight windows in the NFL, we need a slinger as our QB.  Someone who gets it through the window before it closes.

As we sit and eval QBs, I think that is an attribute we should look for.

Quinn Ewers, Will Howard types are pushers not slingers.  They will be journeyman QBs in the NFL.

When I think of a slinger, I think of someone like John Elway.  Gets it there quickly.

Phil: A very TIMELY observation! Assuming you watched the game last night, it was difference between Ohio State's QB and the guy who couldn't make the grade at Ohio State and transferred to... Texas (where he almost single-handedly, IMO, lost the game). Bob

When I think of a slinging type QB I think Brett Favre. Aaron Rodger is another they make the throws up field don't necessarily dink and dunk. Their average yards per pass is usually high and overall yardage is well over 4,000 per season. Eli was that type of Quarterback. That's why I like Dart he lead the nation in average yards per pass had a high completion percentage and can get out and run if needed like an Elway. Not saying he is Elway but the characteristics are there. McCord is a slinger as well lead nation in yards passing which means he isn't afraid to let the ball go.
When Jones first came out he was a slinger and high risk reward player. Made the throws and got the name Danny dimes eventually the coaching carousel took that as he was made to conform to the whims of coaches that came and went. Enough with the revisionist history. The Giants should take Dart I think he is the best if not close to the best QB in this draft. He had less pass attempts and more yards than Sanders both passing and running. If Dart had Sanders or Manning on the back of his jersey he would be the first overall pick in this draft.

Your slingers are also good examples.  It's a live arm and a willingness plus confidence to throw it in a tight space.

Running Ability

Pocket awareness

Processing speed

Mistake prone vs non-mistake prone

Gun slingers vs cautious

Edit to add more-  Intangibles and off-field attributes (ie, work ethic, leadership, etc)

I just want someone that actively pushes the ball down field in rhythm. It's actually really hard to find as most college qbs live on hot reads and dump passes.

Phil: I forgot to put this in my earlier post. Although we apparently disagree (you say Howard's a "pusher"), I believe Will is a "slinger" compared to Ewers. There were at least a few mid-range passes that were "slung" into what looked to be INT territory, but by the time the ball arrived, the receiver had crossed into the hole between defenders. One in particular (I think in the 2nd quarter) was particularly impressive to me. Bob

I actually liked notre dames backup the other night more than Riley Leonard.

Pick a QB and ask this question first:

Was his arm live?

Next ask these two questions:

How confident was he of making his downfield throws?

Did he make downfield throws?

Last question:

What was his team's success?

Good way of seeing things I think.
