#Giants QB search: Should #Giants give a 3-year, $100M+ contract to Sam Darnold if he's on the Baker Mayfield trajectory?

What if Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson or Derek Carr shakes free? Part 2 of 3-part QB series.

@CSimmsQB
:  "None of the free agents move the needle at all, for me, except Sam Darnold. This is such a big year for the Giants that you can't deal with some guy who, 'We see talent and potential, and we think we can make his throwing a little better.' You need a guy who can run the offense, make the throws and all that."

It's a really interesting question. The return to norm of Darnold standards in the final two games is very worrying. Plus could he cope with the melting pot if he returns to New York with all the baggage of his stint with the Jets?

Gun to my head, today - I'd say no.

Well, I don't think they will choose that path. I believe Daboll and Schoen are determined to draft a QB. And Darnold did pumpkin in the two biggest games of his career..really poor permances that burst that potential contract bubble.

Who knows what going to happen in FA, but the QBs out there aren't promising. I think a bridge QB is a possible,a caretaker until either Ward or Schedurr are ready. Id rather than pick the best player like Hunter or Carter, but I'm really hoping they don't do something stupid like a trade up.

Answer to question in subject line... no. I'd rather take a wild guess about one of this year's QB's than pay Darnold that amount. I never liked him in college and still don't see anything worth that kind of money. Bob
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

I would- yes.  We are in such dire need of competent QB play and I believe Darnold can absolutely deliver on that.  $33M/year for competent QB play in a make or break year for both the GM and coach to show improvement seems to be a no-brainer, especially in what I consider to be a very down year for QB prospects.  If the QB prospects this year were anything like last year it would be a hell no....but beggars can't be choosers.

Why would Darnold come here ? His success at Minnesota just shows how important a supporting cast is to the success of the QB. He would sink back into oblivion with this team

No way!....didnt we see Darnold locking onto recievers and unable to process under pressure in the playoff game.

Also Phil Simms told us Daniel Jones would be great for years on end so he is the last person I wanna hear from.

If what you said prior is correct, why would Donald stay?  Isn't DJ being groomed to become the starter?  Your notions regarding Donald and DJ seem to be at odds with each other - both can not be true.

To answer the question, no.  I don't see Donald tangibly altering our trajectory.

I think many of you are putting way too much emphasis on darnolds last two games against the rams and lions. The previous two weeks he played really well against 2 other good teams, the packers and seahawks. And on top of that he had an outstanding overall season.  I personally think he has grown into a very viable starter. Not top end, for sure,  but a huge improvement over what we've been seeing.

Painter

No! And for reasons which were very much made clear by his performance when it mattered far more than at any time earlier. Despite the 14-3 record in this his 7th season, 4th team, he still has a losing QBRec for his career and blinked, essentially blanked, not once but twice when his Vikings season was on the line. That is a red flag which I find definitive unless and until he proves it to be otherwise.

Cheers!

We made the mistake once with Jones, rewarding him after ONE decent year. If we don't learn from our mistakes we are doomed to be bad forever.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Darnold showed who he was the last 2 games - the guy he always was.

The only way this team should look his way us on a one year deal.

If your going to gamble on a Qb, gamble on one with a cost controlled contract.

It's Darnold not Donald. Anyway - I never said DJ is being groomed to be the starter. How do I know what the Vikings have planned? What I did say is that all indications are that the Vikings are planning on throwing Jones into the QB mix for next year. McConnell recruited Jones for a reason and Jones chose the Vikings over a number of other teams.
