Should #Giants give a 3-year, $100M+ contract to Sam Darnold

He would most likely stabilize the team enough to keep Daboll & Schoen's job for a few more years.

Big Blue will be in the same spot we are at the end of his contract if not sooner due to injury or declining performance.

There are a lot of ghosts he will remember being back at Met Life stadium.

I would be shocked if he agreed to come back and play at Met Life for a contract. As Todge stated in a reply in this thread. Who's says he would agree to come here unless it's a completely ridiculous contract that is by far and away the highest offer.

Just my opinion.

If he was cheap, yes. But the price is too high for his services, in my opinion. He play well in ONE YEAR. We've seen this movie before.

Quote from: LennG on January 23, 2025, 07:54:11 PMWe made the mistake once with Jones, rewarding him after ONE decent year. If we don't learn from our mistakes we are doomed to be bad forever.
Jones threw 24 TDs in 12 games his rookie year. That is a "good" rookie season. He was injured for the better part of other seasons.

He was rewarded because the Giants just won a road playoff game against a heavily favored 14-3 team in which DJ threw for 300 yards and ran for 80. There isn't a GM alive who would tear that all down and start a complete rebuild.  Especially considering there were no other viable QB options available.

Vikings probably signed Daniel Jones as insurance in case they lose Darnold but make no mistake, this is McCarthy's job to lose.  He will be given every chance to start.

no to darnold.  we need a bridge...cousins is just as good over the years and will be cheap.

Hell no.  Want to give him 1 years for 15-20?  No problem.

May I ask, If I were the Vikings, why wouldn't they just franchise tag Darnold for 1 year to see if he could do it again?

I mean, if they do that and if he begins to struggle at any point during the year, it would then be the perfect time to start JJ McCarthy.

Plus it would give McCarthy the time to fully recuperate.

Context matters, that was a historically bad Vikings defense.

He followed that up by looking absolutely trash against the Eagles the following week but everyone likes to forget that game existed and focus on the Vikings game as if it was the last game we played that year. In 6 years Jones only threw over 300 yards in 9 games, and he happened to do it one time vs one of the worst defenses ever, and because of that every GM would be crazy not to retain him? Not sure that's logical because every single anonymous GM/Front office ranking of Qbs to start every season had him 32nd, behind rookies and sometimes behind backups. Even Jones supporters on the board here didn't want him retained, or if they did only wanted it if he came in at 25 million per year.

Im not defending Jones it was time to move on

But while true... this whole Vikings terrible defense talk cant just simply be the reason Jones had a good game and helped win us a playoff game

The Vikings played 17 games prior and only lost 3 of them

Bad defense or not Jones had an exceptional game in primetime and made It hard for any GM to tear that down

He ended up being a bust.... but it isn't as simple as "The Vikings had a bad defense"

uconnjack8

no thanks and its not about the price.

For the people saying its too much money, do you see $33 million/year (without knowing guarantees) that doesn't seem like a crazy number.  It's about 60% of what elite QBs are getting.

The ranking of the defense is based on every game they played all season prior to that.

Woody

Not sure if I would do that . His last two games were very much the signs of the old Sam Arnold ...troubling...and those two games were the biggest he has played in so far in his career. Money he will want is not worth it to me.

The context is that he only had a handful of games even over 200 yards that year, it was very pedestrian and 2 of those games were against at historically bad Vikings team that made him look good. Did the GMs ignore the 135 yard, 1 Int, 53 cmpl% game that he had the week after that Vikings game? He averaged like 170 yards a game against some really bad teams that year, so yeah I think most would say that game was because of a horrible defense and playing them twice in 5 weeks, certainly not something he replicated.

Brooklyn Dave

It wouldn't matter if we gave a three year contract to Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson. With John Mara as the owner, the unquaified Joe Schoen as GM and the equally un qualified HC , Brian Daboll , we still would be bad.

Winning starts at the top  and we have a terrible owner, and an unqualified GM and Head Coach.

It's not just talk... it's fact.

Jones threw over 300 yards that year on three separate occasions: Detroit and Minnesota (2x). The pass defense rankings of those teams? Minny was 31st and Detroit was 32nd.

To put it in another context, Jones won a gold medal in the high jump of 4'. The next week, when the bar was significantly raised, he flopped.

Getting back to the original topic, I would not want Darnold at that price.
