You don't know how good you had it until it's gone

Dave Gentleman was right, Saquon Barkley is a generational talent and will be wearing a gold jacket one day. He is what we envisioned when he was drafted #2. In the right environment he would have flourished as he is now doing with the Eagles. He is the real deal.
Problem was we had nothing to support this great talent, nothing to make this future hall of famer
achieve his potential. For the Giants and Gentleman, we basically wasted that draft pick and never really knew the talent we had until now, when we see how great he really is.
Just too bad we never had the supporting cast to really see how good we could have had it.
Now that he is gone we see how good we could have had it.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Fair points.

I gotta just push back and say we just went too long with a failing QB which set us back. Saquon was not the same player with the Giants that he is today. Nowhere near the same type runner as Ed pointed out in previous thread.

Rich - I know you are excellent at this type stuff - if we went side by side (draft picks only) and compared Gettleman to Shoen - which GMs have had better drafts?...reason I ask is somewhere I saw there were like 16 former Giants playing this weekend in the championships

Maybe Gettleman was a good drafter but a poor free agent GM??

Remember Daniel Jeremiah talking about Saquon at draft time?  Only comp he had with Saquon was Adrian Peterson.  The guy is what he was supposed to be.  The Giants simply did not put a team around him that could let him do what he can do + a couple freak injuries didn't help either.

Anyway, as Giants fans we all should have known this was exactly how this would play out this year- I mean, after all, it's our lot in life it seems that every crappy thing that could possibly happen to us....happens.  As soon as that clip of Mara on Hard Knocks came out I was like....oh great, I've got a feeling we may be seeing that one again....and again....and again.....for possibly the next few DECADES.   >:( 2

I would pump the brakes on the good jacket talk.  He needs at 3 more great years for that to happen.  I think the world of him but he does not have a HOF resume' at this point.

That is true. Seasons like this season and 2018 are Hall of Fame level performances, but you can't just have two or three of those to actually make it. Just ask Tiki.

I think if they win the Superbowl and he gets MVP, and then literally never played another down, he gets in. The narrative would be the Giants held him back.

If he kept playing and his play declines, he doesn't get in.

Hi Lenn,

I hate to be a stickler but it's Dave "Gettleman."

Next Barkley rushed for over 1300 yards and over 700 yards receiving in 2018, along with a 5.0 ypc.

He also was excellent in 2022 as well.

I know it doesn't compare to what he is doing in 2024-2025,

But

Many of us loved him, but none of us have any control over what the leadership of the Giants decides to do regarding their players.

Players don't make the Hall of Fame because they would have done more earlier in their career had things broken differently for them. Doesn't work that way. They get in for what they have done.

Barkley can get in. He's just not in yet. And very few RBs play at the level he's at right now beyond their late 20s.

Dave Gettleman is the worst thing that ever happened to Saquon Barkley. I wish someone would write a book on how much damage Gettleman actually did to the franchise.

uconnjack8

Terrell Davis had 4 worthy years and 2 Super Bowls.

I don't think this year is enough.

If I remember correctly, Gettlemen also talked about building a "hog mollie" offensive line to aid Barkley's pursuit of that golden jacket.

We all know how that played out and I, personally, am sick and tired of talking about this past news. The bus has long pulled out of the terminal, with Barkley in the back seat, that took him down the Turnpike and dropped him off near that ugly stadium near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

He's had a dream season for himself and it was good to see semblance of his full potential on display for the first time in his career.

Now, he gets to go to his first Super Bowl. He'll help make it an exciting one, that's for sure.

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

He's no longer on this roster, dead to me.

He plays for them so I wish nothing but ill on him.

Mara sticking with Jones has crippled this franchise. Turns out Barkley was the one thing holding it together.
When Barkley played with Eli he had a great season because the defenses had to respect Eli's passing attack. With Jones all the defenses did was focus on stopping Barkley, they could care less what Jones did. In fact I believe Jones good running stats were a direct result of the defense focusing solely on Barkley. They would fake to Barkley and then roll Jones the other way through a hole big enough to drive a truck through. The players and opponents knew it was all about Barkley, not the stellar Giants management team though. Thats  why the players were dismayed when Jones was signed and Barkley tagged, not the other way around (or Jones dropped all together).

Daniel Jones is the single worst important decision this franchise ever made
