SMART, TOUGH, DEPENDABLE

President Rick

such a great game...no turnovers or major penalties by either team...a slew of future HOF'ers....HOF defensive game plan by BB......went down to the wire...and the result...priceless!!

The climax of arguably the greatest coaching-team effort since the three-time Championship Vince Lombardi-led Packers. Parcells, Belichick and that entire staff worked miracles with that team of cagey old veterans, superstars in their twilight years and players waiting for their chance to show their worth when the pressure cooker was at its most intense.

As time has passed, and has given enough pause to reflect on the magnitude of the accomplishment of the 1990 Football Giants' season, it is abundantly clear now why this season, more than any other, put Parcells in the Hall of Fame, set forth Belichick on his way to a legendary head coaching career where he will, one day, join his mentor, competitor and friend in Canton, and gave Giants fans one final glorious moment from the Golden Era of the 1980s before they all started parting their ways.

It is now part of NFL history and Giant lore. But to quote the Super Bowl video's final line:

"It was a game for the ages, but it was played in an atmosphere where events of the day were not forgotten."

The entire Gulf War background. Whitney Houston's legendary version of the National Anthem. The intense struggle between two cold-weather Northeast teams literally melting in the mild Tampa January evening weather. The first Super Bowl which was decided on the final play of the game, not considering previous Roger Staubach "Hail Mary" plays.

A game which will forever live in lore for the Giants, but infamy for the Bills.

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

The season was saved by a backup QB, Jeff Hostetler. He was never given the accolades he truly deserved, in light of the Giants backup QB situation after that year. It was a great team, but in the hands of Tommy Cutlet or any QB not named The Hefty Lefty, that season would have ended in disaster.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."
~ Coach Tom Coughlin

A backup QB that took an absolute BEATING in that game.  The shot he took from, I think the name was Levon Seals(?)- I did not think he was going to make it.  And how he held onto the ball on Bruce Smith's safety....which should have been a TD...  just amazing!

The one thing about Jeff Hostetler that his teammates loved about him most was that he was ALWAYS ready and ever-so-willing to do anything to get into the game to make even the smallest of contributions to help the Giants win.

People often forget that the 1984 draft was still a time when the USFL was signing big-name talent away from the NFL. In fact, it was expected that Boomer Esiason would become a first-round draft pick since Steve Young was gobbled up by the USFL L.A. Express. Even Jeff Hostetler was getting looks from teams looking to replace their big-name QBs, such as San Diego. So, the Giants, even though Parcells now decided on Simms, with Rutledge backing him up, decided they could now develop their own QB and getting the Hoss in the third round, after picking Banks and Roberts in the first, was considered a value pick for them in what became a cornerstone draft for the 1980s Giants.

As mentioned, the hits Hostetler took in this game were a continuation of the punishment he received the week before in San Francisco. The man literally showed his coach, and his team, that he also had the toughness required to lead this team into battle. That's why we all loved him for all the things he did to cross-up defenses in the playoffs.

He was the epitome of the "team concept" that Parcells built his team's culture around and it was arguably one of the purest displays of the best "team" winning the championship since Lombardi demonstrated it in winning those three NFL Titles for Green Bay and the first two Super Bowls.

Brilliant, inspiring and the type of football that has come to define what Tom Coughlin referred to as "Giant Pride."

Peace!

As great the game plan was, as great the coaching was and as great the execution was it still took a missed FG to win us that Lombardi.

Not that I am complaining.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Indeed! It was this lesson Lombardi imparted on a group of boys from St. Cecilia to strap on their football helmets and take on other high schools with enrollments many times their size ...

... and beat them!

It worked for him in the 1940s and 50s as it did for Parcells in 1990 as it did for Tom Coughlin a generation later. An amazing lesson passed on through the years.

Peace!
