Dave Gettleman told Paul Schwartz of the @nypost
that it's no surprise what Saquon Barkley is doing
"The thing people didn't understand when I took him is that he's a threat to go the distance any time the ball is in his hands."

Fake news.

Everyone knew what Barkley could do. Unfortunately for the Giants, Gettleman didn't follow through on his "hog mollie" acquisition and development.

Apparently, Gettleman didn't know or chose to not to accept that Barkley was widely regarded as a "Boom or Bust" runner at PSU. If he thought, it would be more "boom" with the Giants, he did little to make it happen as he now sees with Barkley behind a quality Eagles Oline.

Cheers!

Every time Gettleman opens his mouth he makes his tenure here look worse and worse. It's you, Dave. You were the problem. Barkley is finally free of this organization's ineptitude and can fully express his boom or bust talents (which, by the way, we've all known about since day 1).

Why do we keep hearing from Gettleman? At least Handley had the good sense to disappear.

Gettleman also said after he drafted Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick, that he would be a Giant for a long long time, and the fans would love him. How did that turn out?

As for Barkley, he wasn't so much the problem with the 2nd overall pick, as much as Gettleman not hitting on a franchise QB. Because of that, he set the Giants back at least six years.

A lot tougher to score TDs from anywhere when the defense knows Barkley is the only threat the offense possesses thanks to its GM stupidly trading away and not replacing the only other player that a DC would even have to THINK about the week leading into the game.  This dope.  Why does anybody even care to ask this clown show questions at all?

Gettelman can say whatever he wants. Nobody ever doubted Saquon's talent. He was the best running back prospect since at least Adrian Peterson. But Saquon is a prime example of the true value of a running back. Drafting him at 2 was a mistake and anyone who can't acknowledge that is in denial.

Drafting him at 2...for the Giants team as it was and what it became was absolutely a mistake.  Sometimes I wonder, just as a thought exercise- How would Giants fans regard Saquon's time in NY if we was drafted in the bottom half of the 1st round or later?  Personally, I think there was such an outcry over WHERE he was drafted (which, remember, he had zero control over) that it tainted most fans' view of his time in NY.  Either because they wanted to be "right" or because they were just so disgusted with how Gettleman went about running the organization and drafting a RB at 2 was a prime example.  And I think that has colored most fans' views of Saquon even now, to this day, when the guy is about to take the field on the biggest stage and do what he does (and should have done in NY if Gettleman hadn't screwed the pooch).

The disappointment is about the value of the pick, not the player.

Yeah but what I've seen is a lot of fans have a lot of trouble separating the two.  I mean, the fact we're still talking about it (and it comes up in pretty much every conversation here that contains Saquon) is a pretty decent indication of that.

Can't argue with that. Throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I'm happy for him. Hope he runs for 300+ yards, a couple of scores, and they lose.  :ok:

It's not about where he was drafted as much as it was about where the team was. Spending significant capital on a running back given that the team had a terrible O-line, a bottom tier defense and an aging QB. It was a win now move for a team that needed to be reset. Running backs should never be building blocks. Their lifespan, on average, is too short and they require to much help to be truly effective.

He was drafted to a team with Eli and OBJ. If you take a RB at 2 with that on offense you should be trying to win immediately. Instead he trades obj for peanuts, drafts a rookie QB that stunk in college which then pushes his beloved HOF QB out the door and thus makes the Barkley pick idiotic. As we would soon learn he had no plan and no idea what he was doing.

If DG had success actually putting together an offensive line to protect his QB and open holes for his RB, his and the Giant fortunes would have been different. The Philly OL and Saquon's success there is hardly a coincidence.
