Quote from: madbadger on June 19, 2024, 07:24:45 PMI agree with three of the four. I think Handley gets a bit of a bad rap as we went from having two very good quarterbacks to scraping the bottom of the barrel. He wasn't a great coach by any means but he won 45% of the games he coached in NY. Shurmur IMHO was a much worse coach. He had already failed spectacularly in Cleveland but that didn't deter Mara. He was awful in almost every regard and his successor Macadoo wasn't much better. At worst Handley was the fourth worse Giants head coach in the past 49 years.

I think when you are evaluating HCs it's worth noting the team records before and after they took over.  In the case of Handley, he took over the champions with a 13-3 record (then going 8-8 and 6-10) and when Dan Reeves took over the record jumped to 11-5

Shurmer took over a bad team and only slightly improved.  When Joe Judge took over from him, there 2 more games were won.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on June 19, 2024, 09:33:57 PMBecause if they are a decent guide, then I'm not seeing why Runyan will be an upgrade to Glowinski when I look at the last handful of years for each player.

If you look at overall grades, yes (although there is the age issue with Runyan turning 27 and Glowinski being 32).

I think if you drill down, you will see Runyan is the better pass blocker while Glowinski is the better run blocker.  In a passing league, I will take the pass blocker

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on June 19, 2024, 08:19:53 PMSXD,

I can get on board with the idea that if he throws for about 4k yards, at least 25 TDs, about 10 picks, a rating in the mid 90s, AND the team makes the playoffs, then he has a pretty good shot of being brought back on this contract.

All those stats would be top 10.  DJ isn't even among the top 10 highest-paid QBs.  Don't you think if that happened DJ would have better than "a pretty good shot" to continue with the team?

Quote from: AZGiantFan on June 19, 2024, 03:33:59 PMI wouldn't have wanted them to draft an RB over the safety Tyler Nubin.

From my perspective, RB and Safety are of roughly equal positional value.  So, really, it comes down to need and which is the better prospect.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on June 19, 2024, 01:15:22 PMAs a footnote
Teams that have a Qb on the practice squad that can be promoted as a 3rd Qb for every game making the need to keep 3 Qbs unnecessary.

Also there can be 17 players on the practice squad instead of 16 if that player is an international one, of which our backup kicker is currently.

I believe the only reason the Giants would keep 3 QBs on the 53-man roster is if they believe the QB on the PS would be poached by another team.

Here is how they opened up space for the signing

The team has also placed wide receiver Chase Cota, who broke his collarbone during the recently-completed mini-camp, on Injured Reserve.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Our WRs. Should.be amazing

Quote from: kingm56 on June 19, 2024, 06:00:22 AMBecause draft status equals unit success? If that was true, why is our OLine so bad?  You're also viewing our roster in a vacuum.  Presently, the Giants may have the 4th best WR corps in the division; perhaps they could be better than Wash,, but clearly Dal and Phili have more established talent and bonafide APs in Brown and Lamb. For more context, here's a list of ten teams that have multiple AP, PBs, and/or 1K/yr WRs:

Texans
Bears
Dolphins
Bengals.
49ers
Eagles
Buccaneers
Seahawks
Vikings
Rams

The teams above have amazing or very good WR corps. At best, you could classify our Giants as having the potential to be good, to above average. I haven't seen a shred of evidence to suggest they're among the NFLs best (ie amazing). Honestly, some fans are treating Hyatt as an AP based on his projected draft status (ie first round value); however, there are good reasons he dropped to the 3rd and failed to make a splash last season.  He needs to be a more complete route runner, and handle press better. In short, I don't project an 'amazing' WR corps; however, they should be improved. How much of an improvement?  We'll have to wait and see. If Nabers becomes CeeDee Lamb, we can revisit this discussion; however, I'm hesitant to make any predictions before he takes an NFL snap.

I think there is a lot to unpack here.  I agree the O-line illustrates that just throwing draft capital at a position will not ensure success at the position.  I also wouldn't argue that the Giants have had the worst receiving corps in the NFC East for some time.

That all said, I think there is potential for the receivers on the roster to move into the top 10.   Not saying they will, but the talent levels are there.

The Associated Press, after years of providing no guidance whatsoever for what "Comeback Player of the Year" means, has finally given the voters something more than "comeback."

"The spirit of the AP Comeback Player of the Year Award is to honor a player who has demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity by overcoming illness, physical injury or other circumstances that led him to miss playing time the previous season," the AP told voters on Tuesday.

In other words, "Coming Back from Sucking" is no longer a thing. Likewise, "Coming Back from Being a Backup" apparently doesn't qualify the player for the award. (That said, being benched would arguably count as "other circumstances that led him to miss playing time the previous season.")

Given that the change was sparked by Geno Smith winning the award in 2022 and undoubtedly exacerbated by Damar Hamlin not winning it in 2023, the "Coming Back from Being a Backup" subcategory presumably is dead.

If that's the case (as it seems to be), anyone who has dropped some cash on, say, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson at 12-1 (or so) might be a little upset right now.

Just days after its inaugural season came to an end, the UFL has announced that eight players have already earned themselves NFL contracts.

The spring league, which formed this year as a merger of the USFL and XFL, allows players under contract to leave for the NFL after the season. If those players stick in the NFL they'll stay there, but if they return to the UFL they will go back to their old UFL teams.

The UFL's announcement identified defensive end Jalen Redmond signing with the Vikings, cornerback Gareon Conley signing with the Cowboys, guard Liam Fornadel signing with the Patriots, wide receiver Daewood Davis signing with the Panthers, kicker Jake Bates signing with the Lions, offensive lineman Kohl Levao signing with the Jets, linebacker Willie Harvey Jr. signing with the Cowboys and running back Jacob Saylors signing with the Giants.
