What does he mean by this?

The field side is the side of the field furthest from the snap. For example, if you are taking a snap from the left hash, the field side would be anything to the right of the right hash. Because throws to the field side are longer, they require more arm strength and have to be on time since defenders will have more time to react and jump these throws.

What Dan is saying is that because DJ had a propensity to not throw to the field side, defenses could roll coverage away from there, effectively only having to worry about covering 75% of the width of the field rather than sideline to sideline.

As you are likely aware the ball is usually lined up on the right or left hash mark.  The field side is the side of the ball with more field (if on the right hash, the left side of the field).

If defenses are rotating defenders away from the bigger side of the field, Dan suggests they are doing so because the QB isn't threatening the far side of the field with his reads and passes.

That's a good explanation, Rich @MightyGiants  and helps clarify it for me and I agree. Thank you!

Peace!

When I hear a term like Opportunity Cost, I have to chuckle knowing that almost always, it's more accurate to assess it in hindsight than it is to predict it which, of course, is our specialty. However, we weigh the return on our options before the fact, it always comes to the return after the fact.

And by the way, while we all love the idea of choosing the best player available, the choice is more often a matter of prioritizing and addressing need on the first 2 Days at least. And given the uncertainty as to how others may view their Opportunity Costs, back-up options and flex can be essential to success. Certainly, the Giants are not one of the teams which might have the luxury to do otherwise.

Cheers!
