Do we have any concerns at all about Van Roten's age? I appreciate he put up a 75 PFF last year and seems to still be good, but 34 is up there.

I would be lying if I said I didn't.  That said, beggers can't be choosers

Totally agree, and look, he apparently played at a 75 PFF level last year so you'd like to think even a small age-driven decline will still be a pretty additive player for us. But I just feel like once one of these guys clears the 32/33 zone you're starting to get into potentially exponential decline territory.

That said there have been plenty of O linemen that have remained good until 35-plus, and he's not any sort of long term solution, so I'm choosing to be reasonably optimistic about him being a solid value-add for us.

As veterans age the decline is often not consistent.  Many aging vets start the season strong but fade when December rolls around.

As you said, beggars cannot be choosers.

Most would agree this was a solid signing for us, all things considered. It's not like there were tons of options.

Yes but we're talking about the Giants offensive line.

If we get 1 year of solid OL play out of him, that's a win.

From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

Any move that gets Neal out of the starting lineup is a win.

Not at all. Dallas oline has proved over the years that age isn't much of an issue on the line as much as coaching and teamwork is

Hard to not be worried about anyone at that age, especially with our history, but he was good last year and played something like 97% of snaps so I'd just view him as a solid player until proven otherwise.

Daniel Jones 11/15 at practice today with 2 TD's & 1 INT.

Deep TD to Malik Nabers on an out & up on 3rd & long then found Jalin Hyatt wide open on a scramble to his right.

Interception was trying to fit in a pass to Daniel Bellinger between linebackers & Bobby Okereke tipped it up to Dyontae Johnson.

Giants Training Camp Day 7 thoughts

•Probably the best day from Daniel Jones so far. Got the ball in right spots outside of tipped up INT. Good deep ball to Nabers. Hyatt deep catch had to be waited for but a catch nonetheless
•Twice Isaiah Simmons tipped up an INT to Alex Johnson who is working at safety
•Dyontae Johnson continues to get 1st team work and had 2 would be sacks before his interception on Jones
•Theo Johnson now leads all TE's in catches from Jones this camp with a seam catch & screen grab
•Greg Van Roten practicing at Center after Runyan did for 2 days is eye roll worthy

Yeah, age is a cruel bitch. I look at it this way, he's a 12-year journeyman who has accumulated an incredible amount of NFL knowledge, which is the bane of a rookie, or slow learner. So there's that. Secondly, he's played for Bricillo as well as a year under Daboll at Buffalo

People age differently. I'm 71, but am like a car with 260,000 miles that was never well maintained. I know a man several years older than me who still plays softball at a high level (even won the national title at Las Vegas at 75 yrs old [the 60 and over group]) and still refs soccer and basketball running back and forth up the field, and could kick my ass it I was to take him on. As for me, the only way I'd run is if a wild animal was after me...and I'd lose

Anyway, if he's healthy and has kept himself in shape, he is a nice filler for now and can also be a mentor to youngsters coming up. I don't think I'd worry about the age thing until it's a problem. And maybe like Rich pointed out, he'll start to fade towards the end of the season. Until he does though, I hope he plays like a superstar. He might think this is his last hurrah and wants to give it everything he's got...hope so anyway
The fact that Keith Richards has outlived Richard Simmons, sure makes me question this whole, "healthy eating and exercise" thing

AZGiantFan

One thing to note is that he has done a very good job of staying healthy.  After his first 2 years when he got little playing time he has played in double digit games, averaging about 14 games played per year.  And missed only 1 game in the last 3 years.

If nothing else, maybe he can help our young Olinemen learn how to stay healthy through the rigors of an NFL series.  Plus, he is coming off arguably his best season.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Not slowing my roll
