We better replace that kicker whom they failed to realize he practices well but he chokes in games.

@Bob In PA and @T200 I understand where you're coming from. And if the Giants were a normal team, I would agree.

But this isn't a normal team. This is a franchise in the middle of a historically bad run. How do you tell fans they have to invest that much emotional energy, then if the team plays poorly and loses, the fans get blamed for being too negative?

Should the fans be emotionally invested or not? Because you can't have it both ways. This isn't my kid's soccer game where I'm cheering them no matter what. If we cheer hard for the team, then we run the bums out of town when they play like bums. That's why we're called fanatics.

From what I've read on this board the past few days:

1. Blame the reporters who report on dysfunction in the locker room.

2. If the team plays poorly and the fans boo, then the fans will be responsible for any further poor play from the team.

Let's keep in mind this franchise has double digit losses in 8 of the last 10 seasons and hasn't won a division title in 13 years.

This season is up to the players and coaches. No one else is responsible. Not the fans. Not the reporters. The job is to win games. If the players and coaches think they're just rebuilding and winning is optional, then we've already lost.

The teams who do well have high standards and high expectations. The Giants chose to be an organization that makes excuses and has low standards for success. They did that. They have to fix it.

Doc: Good post. I get your point, too, and do not think your attitude as unreasonable at all.

This is a professional sport, the guys are getting paid, fans pay through the nose to attend games and get a snack or two, etc., but we have a lot of young players who make mistakes.

They fought off the opening-play fumble on the road. I think that alone entitles (using the word very loosely) them to one game (against a hated rival) in which they enjoy full fan support for four quarters or at least until they're completely out-of-contention, especially because (for one thing) we're still "in the hunt" mathematically and, at worst, have a chance to take a big step forward.

Great post Doc. I completely agree with every word.

SI #2: CLOSE THE GAP between the Giants and their KEY DIVISION RIVALS (i.e. DALLAS and Philadelphia).

All eyes are on the balanced scorecard this Thursday! Have they, or have they not, CLOSED THE GAP???

THAT, my friends, IS the QUESTION!

Peace!

You bring up some good points but I think we're talking two different aspects.

The cheering is specifically about the fans in the seats. They've already paid good money to be there for the game. A monetary investment has been made... invest emotionally and root like hell for the team.

As far as the comments from the board, first, Ranaan is a click-bait troll. Both Daboll and Hyatt said that nonsense Ranaan put out as reporting was false.

Second, what reasonable person would say that the team loses because the fans boo?

There's no rules on how to be a fan. But if I spend money to go to a game, especially against a division team, best believe I'll be rooting from start to finish. That's just my take.

Quote from: Doc16LT56 on September 23, 2024, 12:43:57 PMOut of curiosity, what do the fans have to do with winning this game?

That side comment was simply to try and avoid this topic from devolving into post after post of nay-sayers who have lost all optimism for this team. I now see that was a wasted effort and some have latched onto it to whine about the Giants last decade of history - the very thing I was hoping to avoid. You have brought the mental baggage I spoke of.

@T200 last season you would've been cheering through the 40-0 loss to Dallas? Color me skeptical.

@bamagiantfan you have an issue with fans who consider past performance? And I have an issue with delusional fans who try to police the fan base. If you're going to dish it out I hope you can take it. So this is where we are.

For the record, I haven't been to a game since 2018, I think.

But, I watch all the games I can, and I watched every second of the 40-0 loss last year. I was rooting for them since there obviously wasn't much to cheer about. But it was more yelling and cussing than anything else.

I'm not a fair-weather fan. I proudly wear my gear and the day after that 40-0 loss, I was still talking trash to Dallas fans.

I was just trying to put out there that there are fans on the other side of the spectrum from you. You're a different type of fan and I respect that as well.

In those situations, of course.

But, forgive me if I misunderstood your post, it seems as though you're withholding your cheering for the team until they prove they are worthy.

Being a fan requires being emotionally invested, both good and bad. If you're readily available to boo them out of the stadium, why not cheer them on with that same fervor?

Again, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to fan. Me? I'm optimistic for every game regardless of what happened the previous week. Any given Sunday.  :goteam:

I don't think we're disagreeing here. I always start cheering but will boo if I feel the team is mailing it in or is just being outclassed.

I think where we differ is that I'm not giving the organization the benefit of the doubt throughout the week. But for me that's only expressed through this board. For other fans, they may express frustration through social media.

Putting my humanity aside for this post, I HATE THE COWBOYS. I have since becoming a Giant fan in 1965. I am fully cognizant that they(the cowturds) are people with families, hopes, dreams etc just like all of us. That being said I would love to see some helmet stars get absolutely wiped out by clean hard hits that 20 years ago would make highlite reels, and in today's game draw flags. Wiped out to the point that Jones is wiping tears at the sight. A big problem in today's game is that the rule makers have demonstrated little knowledge of physics. A 330lb lineman with a QB in his grasp making a form tackle CANNOT stop the laws of gravity. Yet flags are thrown for roughing. Sooo might as well quietly go "Buddy Ryan" without the bounty announcement. Not to intentionally injure, but to hit really hard for intimidation. It's the same 15 yard, and 1st down penalty. I've been told at times I will say some things that others may think, but don't verbalize. I HATE THE COWBOYS.

Fans are good for two things: blaming and taking credit. In that sense, rooting can seem almost secondary especially when the Giants have had a long history of losing streaks whether or not following a period of relative success. Of course, that's likely true of most NFL teams.

What is and should be especially irksome to us all is not just the inability to beat Dallas and Philly for far too long but the all too fresh memory of the disgraceful 0-40 and 17-49 trouncings by the Cows last year. The meaningless end-of-season win over a cratering Eagles was little compensation.

So, for me, the TNF game, win or lose, is about regaining respect from a team which sees Our Heroes as not much more than a piece of lint. At least at some point, I'll be looking for at least one smash in the mouth to correct that impression.

Cheers!
