Do you think the officials charging Bellinger with a 15 yard facemask penalty

We'll never know. Players get cut, fined etc. So should officials. That ref who made the wrong call should not get paid for the game. He should also get the worst schedule of games, and made to fly coast to coast each week. That was one of the most irresponsible calls I have ever seen. This is where Mara should blow up in anger with the league. This is where he should intervene. There will be an apology, and/or acknowledgement of a screw up. Take it and stick it where the sun don't shine, that should be the Giants' response.

If the Giants marched down the field, that happens, and they never get into the red zone again i'd say it might have changed the game but they had plenty of opportunities after that happened and blew it all on their own.

I also thought the holding call getting picked up on the Cowboys TD was just as egregious.  Ref saw a hold, threw the flag, replay shows a dude getting held, somehow flag gets picked up after they see the Cowboys had scored a TD.

I thought there was an OL man downfield watching the replay. If it was holding, how does a ref see holding, throw a flag, and then unsee it?

They also flagged the Cowboys for an obvious holding on the Dallas TE on a Cowboys touchdown, but then of course, picked up the flag and let the play stand. Terrible officiating.

Some stats on this ref

the ref for this game is Clay Martin

this is his 5th Cowboys road game since 2018

Dallas is 4-0 in the other games

opponents have been called for 34 penalties (7 more than DAL) for 298 yds (64 more than DAL)

the timing of these penalties resulted in +11.8 EPA edge for Dallas

Quote from: uconnjack8 on September 27, 2024, 08:31:41 AMIt was one of the most egregious errors I have ever seen by officials, but I don't think it affected later plays.  If the team couldn't focus after a bad call, I think that's a big issue for a professional football team.

ucon: So rare we disagree, and in this case IMO it's probably just a matter of semantics.

I agree with your statement as written, but even so it doesn't foreclose the possibility that they would have scored a TD on that first drive.

I agree it affected nothing that occurred subsequently, but certainly reduced substantially (to near-zero) the likelihood of a TD on that initial drive.

PS. What are the odds this type of call becomes reviewable next year, and why isn't it already reviewable?
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

Quote from: MightyGiants on September 27, 2024, 08:25:11 AMTurned the game around?  The Giants were forced to kick an FG early because instead of giving the Giants 15 yards and a first down, they took away 8 yards and then pushed them back 15 yards because they penalized the Giants for a Cowboy's facemask.

If the officials hadn't screwed over the Giants, could this game have ended differently?
It certainly didn't help the Giants cause. That said, winning teams are mentally tougher than to lose a game like this.

From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

The league does have a mechanism whereby the booth opines on a play without the challenge flag being thrown. In fact there was one play where the Ref announced such an occurrence. I don't know the criteria used to trigger it but the Bellinger play would seem to indicate "egregious incorrect call" is not one of them

I'm open to the idea that this ridiculously inexcusable gaffe might have altered the outcome of the game. There is no way to prove that of course, but it does not seem unreasonable to me to suppose that it is possible the Giants might have won had the refs gotten this gaffe right.

I've since learned that the "mechanism I referred to is known as replay assist.  The explanation given for why it was not employed on the Bellinger play is because facemask penalties are not reviewable (per Carl Banks after his discussion with an NFL official).

Total BS.

Loser's Lament.

Yes we got a bad call, but for how many years now have we all come here after a game and blame it on the refs?

The way Jones played we still would have kicked a FG.

Living in Dallas, I've had multiple Cowboy fans tell me how awful face mask call.

I for one am not blaming refs for loss nor will I ever pin a loss on one play.  But this one call was especially egregious.  Since the league has decided to get into bed with the gambling industry it cannot allow such blatantly bad calls to continue ( particularly since the technology exists to correct them).  Otherwise Goodell and Co. risk destroying the integrity of the league

Interesting tidbit - the Clay Martin crew officiated four previous Dallas away games ... and guess what? Yup Dallas won all four. I'm not big on conspiracy theories - but it sure is coincidental isn't it?

One horrendously bad play by a player can result in him losing his job but nothing ever happens to the refs. It's a really difficult job that causes a great deal of angst amongst fans but that angst is made worse by a lack of transparency and responsibility. An officials worst punishment is to not be given any post season games.
