I think it would take a near MVP level performance over the balance of the year.

I don't think that the combination of performing at the level of the last three games and there not being a viable path to drafting a high quality QB prospect would do it.  In that case I think they cut him, pick up a retread like Carson Wentz or Andy Dalton and hope the QB draft picture looks better in 2026.

Him accepting an extremely dramatic paycut to be Cam Wards backup or maybe start part of next season to get him ready.

A minimum of two playoff wins and he has to be a big contributor in those wins.

This is a good thread. I think he would need to take a big paycut. If he does that then the pressure is off and perhaps he even begins to play better knowing he isn't the future.

Wouldn't he be better off in Carolina where he would be in/around his home town, family, and can get a head start on building his business under the "Danny Dimes" trademark which, in the USPTO, is still registered under his parents' home address, I believe.

Seriously, we all wish him the best in his overall improvement and reaching his full potential. That being said, if the Giants' coaches and GM believe he can still grow and improve, and he improves over the course of this season, he'll quite possibly be retained.

The reality is that the Giants, as a whole, do not have the aggregate talent to compete with the upper echelon of the league. Playing at their best, they are a middle of the road, possibly a Wild Card team if they overachieve. Their quarterback appears to not have the ability to put everything all on his back and carry the team with his "it" factor.

Speaking of which, we've discussed the theoretical "it" factor, tried to quantify it and describe it in quarterbacks. It is pretty safe to suggest that Daniel does not have much, if any, of an "it" factor. Conversely, when Ernie Accorsi described Eli Manning at Ole Miss as having the "IT factor (NOTE: with a capital I-T)," he went on to say he and his team would play teams far better than they were but Eli would put it all on his back and, maybe not win the game, but his competitiveness and never-say-die fight was on full display. So impressed was he that he stopped at nothing to get his Quarterback; the rest is history.

Mannings, and other QBs with the "it" factor, don't grow on trees. If the Giants want to fumble around in mediocrity for another decade or two, keep doing what they're doing. But they'll have to deviate at some point and decide:

1. Do I have the right folks in the GM and scouting positions bringing in the right players who will bring home a Super Bowl?
2. Do I have the right Head Coach with the ability to handle the pressure of the NY Media, understands and embraces NY Football Giants' history and, optional but perhaps helpful, grew up in the Northeast/NY Metro area?
3. Do I have a QB who fits in the quintessential NY Giants' tradition (i.e. tough, earns respect of his entire team, has the "it" factor, WINS OVER THE GIANTS FANS)?

History has shown that when the Mara in change can honestly check these three boxes, the Giants are contenders for the NFL's prized possession. In other words, relating to this topic, we see the "it factor" come into play, over and over, until the Lombardi is passed over from the Commissioner to the Mara/Tisch ownership.

Moral of the story: it will take Jones finding the "it factor" in order to retain him."

I think Giants brass has already mentally moved on from Jones. He's only still here because he has to be.

More than a few posters keep saying that the Giants are going to cut DJ, or they've already moved on, but these are presumptuous statements to make.

The same group said the Giants were going to draft a QB (like JJ Mcarthy) at #6, and that DJ would be gone, but once again the opposite came true.

The Giants took Malik Nabers, which was the right decision, and brought back DJ to complete the circle.

Fourteen more games to go, let's see what transpires?

Anyone who thought Jones would be gone for this year just doesnt understand arithmetic.  Cap hit will be different for next year. 

As far as the original question, Giants would need to win the NFC with Jones being a big part of why they did.

He's toast..never has shown the ability to ascend to an elite level, or even above average. He's just a guy that has  mediocre awareness and accuracy. And he's looked inept in spots with adequate protection- no longer a valid excuse for his failings. Good guy that's just that-a guy

Few, if anyone, made those statements; as you stated, most fans realized the Giants were not in a position to draft a QB this season. In fact, the primary discussion revolved around what WR the Giants should draft.  Thankfully, they drafted the correct WR.

There were many who thought they would take a QB, but that QB was going to be on the roster with Jones.

I dont believe that's accurate. You had a very vocal minority making those claims; however, it was limited to a few posters.  Most posters clearly understood the giants were not drafting a QB, at least not without a trade.  Most were ticked off we won 6 meaningless game, which was the reason jones is still on the roster.
