The blocked FG play is usually happening TO the Giants rather than FOR the NYG

Quote from: bamagiantfan on October 07, 2024, 02:33:05 PMI have to admit, I was a bit surprised the ball didn't split Simmons' arms and continue through the uprights. The Giants have found some gut wrenching plays to lose games over my lifetime. Edwards, Westbrook, Desean, 60 yard FGs, botched snap then PI on Seubert not called, and on and on. It was odd to see the stunned look on someone else's face other than the guy in the mirror.

or the ball is blocked, picked up by a Seahawk and run in for a TD and a victory, like what happened in one Eagle's game.

Oh, thanks for bringing that up.  ::)  :banghead:

Kind of laughed watching Meyers getting knocked on his ass after the block.

Quote from: AZGiantFan on October 07, 2024, 02:15:31 PMGood info, Bob.  I suspect he'll be on the field for more FG tries going forward.

Rich: It probably won't work again.  The key is the defender next to where Simmons lines up.

It's his job to make a certain type of block that makes enough "space" for Simmons to jump through cleanly.

The problem is that the necessary block is super-easy to defeat when you know it's coming.

Bob

PS. BTW Simmons did it perfectly. If he lines up even slightly over the center it is a 15-yard penalty.
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

This was the benefit of the new ST coach.  He saw something on film, which he took advantage of.  It's been a long long long time since we saw that sort thing on special teams

That's how you get a good "rep" as a coach (being innovative when the opportunity presents itself).

It's probably "right up your alley" to mention this... keep an eye on the rules committee next off-season.

IMO that play exploits a loophole in the "leaping" rule. In any event, it won't surprise me if they change the rule to make what Simmons did illegal, although I do not view what he did as dangerous in the same way that "leaping" is dangerous (for the center). Nevertheless, I do think what Simmons did to the kicker after he blocked the ball should be a penalty.  In the same manner as it is illegal to whack a receiver who can't see you coming, it should be illegal to do the same to a kicker who is still looking down (keeping the head down throughout the entire kicking process is part of good technique).

Bob

PS. On second thought, the rule in question is probably not the "leaping" rule and I can't remember what they actually call it.

Bob,

Mike Lombardi suggested that this "leap" had already been done by the Patriots.   One thing that troubles me though is they waited until the last FG to pull this out.  Had the game not played out that way, there was a solid chance the game would have ended without the Giants exploiting this weakness.

That point WAS mentioned in something I read.  They had considered it at an earlier point in the game and decided to save it, although (as you might guess) they WERE already regretting not trying it as play moved into the fourth quarter.  So they WERE lucky, in that sense. Bob

Quote from: Bob In PA on October 07, 2024, 11:27:45 AMDon't hold your breath, but it's the type of play that happens to a team when the worm has turned.

We have suffered (almost continuously) for quite a while this century... I wouldn't rule it out.

As stated in the title to another thread.... "we're close."

Bob

I'm not going there. Everybody is close and there are those that execute most.

Tuna said always .you are what you are..prove it every week..beat the Burrows..end their season..and then we get closer to close.

spider: Although there is no doubt IMO that they're close. Nearly every team gets "close" periodically.

Some teams are known for generally taking full advantage of their chances... and then there's the Giants.

The organization has a "solid rep" once they GET to the Super Bowl, and a "pretty good rep" once they get past the first round of the playoffs, but they have a "less-than adequate rep" for just about everything else (all of this being nothing more than my my humble opinion as a long-time fan of the team).
