He's playing at a really high level.

That said, I'm fine with the Giants letting him walk, as I am Barkley.

I'm squarely in the QB + OL + DL = contender formula.

Even though he's a Gopher I am more than pleased with Nubin thus far. 80% of the production at a tiny fraction of the cost. We'll know for sure if we made the wrong decision by not franchising McKinney in a couple of years, but of the list of concerns heading into the mid way point not resigning him is low on that list.

So players aren't allowed to earn their pay? Do you stay at jobs that won't pay you nearly as much as a competitor?

He is playing at a higher level and GB did their homework are paying on his expected play, not his past play. You are basically suggesting that players cannot improve after 4 years in the league at, in his case, only 25 years old. There are 2nd year players who are already 25! Letting drafted talent to continue to walk out the door after 4 years over and over leads to endless recycling of draft capital at the same position. We used to do this at DT and lucked out with replacements (Hankins, Tomlinson, DLaw) but it is a big gamble. Thankfully Schoen put a stop to this plan and extended DLaw. And guess what? He's worth every penny.

Signing inflated salaries for players who have yet to play at a high level is the fast way to sink a team.  Schoen let him walk and it was a good move and almost all felt that way at the time; regardless of how he has stepped up since.

But it's not just McKinney. Love was let go over an easy to match or top $6 million AAV contract.

Love turned down more money in season from the Giants than he signed for from Seattle

at seasons end Love went to the Giants with a 10 mill per year offer. That year the safety market was not bringing in the money and the Giants told Love to test the market. 

Seattle offered 2year -12 mill.  At the time there it was unclear due to conflicting stories if he gave the Giants an option match the Seattle deal.

Sadly, Slayton signed for 2 years and 12 mill that off season. I would hate to think signings Slayton cost us Love

Love was a first class player, who was getting better and better

I stand by suggesting his should have been removed of his captaincy.  Captains don't make foolish mistakes with ill-advised ATV excursions during the football season.  You want to goof around in the off-season, much more understandable, but this was during the bye week if I recall.  They understand their body is their livelihood and don't take chances with injury in a non-football setting.  I fail to see why that's so shocking a suggestion. 

I'm happy for McKinney.  He earned his second contract and the Packers are getting their money worth.  I said during free agency we should have made a bigger push to retain him, and frankly would rather have him than Brian Burns, but I like the fact that Schoen assigns value to players and doesn't deviate at the expense of cap flexibility or future cap implications. 

While McKinney has put together a great 5-game stretch, almost 0% of the top-5 paid safeties over the last 10 years have been worth their contracts.

Totally fine with the decision made by the Giants to not pay him that money.
