Quote from: MightyGiants on November 10, 2024, 03:07:11 PMMy issue with the "Lock is worse" reasoning is that Jones looked terrible today.  If you don't believe your backup QB could play better than what we saw from Jones in Germany, what does that say about your ability to acquire talent?

I've answered this multiple times in other threads. I'll repeat it here if you didn't see it previously:

Schoen deliberately brought in someone worse than Jones to avoid a QB controversy. He and Daboll are playing the long game, not by tanking, but sacrificing the season (knowing Jones isn't the answer) and proving to Mara that they need to be done with DJ once and for all.

Considering this signing was made when DJ was still rehabbing from a serious ACL injury and his ability to return for the season was in question, this is GM malpractice

I consider this more GM malpractice.  A REAL GM simply tells the owner what needs to be done or doesn't take or stay in the job if they need to "PROVE" their opinions.  You are suggesting we are enduring another bad season of NYG football because Schoen wanted to make a point to Mara???

Yes. That's exactly it. Why? Because Mara thinks he's the smartest man in the room. He makes his wishes known instead of shutting up and letting people do the jobs he hired them to do. There's absolutely nothing for him to say. Nothing. Support the people you hire and get out of the damn way.

Quote from: Trench on November 10, 2024, 03:05:30 PMI got mocked in the game thread for pointing out Jones is perhaps the worst starting QB the NY Giants have ever had.

I like Dave Brown better and that says a lot.
Hahaha somebody wasn't around in the 1970s

In 1977 the Giants, run by the great Wellington Mara, had 2 QBs on the roster, both of them mediocre rookies!

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on November 10, 2024, 03:14:21 PMWhether DeVito can be better than Jones or not doesn't personally matter to me. The main reason to be benching Jones at this point is risk mitigation around the injury clause. At 2-8 the season is obviously over. Parsing which of these three QBs is the least bad is of secondary importance, and I would say it is distant secondary importance. It's time to start thinking about what is best for the franchise over the medium term. Risking Jones getting a serious injury just seems beyond foolish to me. I cannot think of a single intelligent reason to do that.
That's very interesting and logical but it's not something any head coach considers when deciding on a starting QB. The HC isn't thinking about the next season. Only the next game.

That's not really true. The Colts were in a similar position with Matt Ryan in 2022 and they benched him in favor of the inferior Sam Ehlinger in order to avoid the risk of his injury clause. You are mistaken if you think this would be unprecedented or that it can't/won't happen.

You're right, Tim. It's easy to see.

You just gotta want to see it. But hey, there were cartwheels to have two years ago :)

Quote from: Trench on November 10, 2024, 02:06:59 PMI would agree with this fully (IF the Giants were sellers at the trade deadline) where we would be in position to send a stockpile of picks for a QB.

I could live with that, Trench, but that would mean another year of futility with all of us pulling out whatever hair is left in our scalp before the season ends.

There's no easy way out of this mess, is there?

Peace!

100% this because in my opinion I have seen little from both men to have me think they can turn this franchise around post Jones.

Gmo11

They have been trying to move on from Jones since the minute they got here and unfortunately they were so good at their job they accidentally made the playoffs during what was supposed to be a cap cleaning (tank) season.

All that did was convince their boss that the plan needed to be changed and they needed to bring back both Jones and Barkley to try and win immediately even though the roster was nowhere near ready for that.

Now the roster actually is ready. They have talent all across the team except at the most important position. If they can get a rookie to even play average football next season this team could be at least in wild card contention.

Bar QB our roster is better than it was when Schoen took over, though his draft picks have been hit and miss. Our coaching isn't. Both are on the GM. Schoen will get another year. Daboll might not IMO but ultimately only Mara and Tisch's views matter.

The Giants have the same QB as when Schoen took over.  If the roster has improved, one would expect a better record.   Since the team has a worse record, and explanation is needed and a fix implemented.

Like many other teams the Giants have a few good players.  They're the worst team in football for many reasons.  People are assuming this is some gem of a team and that QB is the only thing holding them back.  This is supposed to be a rebuild and they have hit a lower point than ever.
