If you could change one decision the New York Giants have made

Quote from: MightyGiants on December 24, 2024, 10:30:00 AMWho would have been the QB when Eli retired?

This isn't even hindsight as I said this at the time...but if they had simply let Eli have a goodbye season that he rightfully deserved, they'd have been terrible but the fans would have gotten a chance to cheer on Eli one last time.  He wanted it.  They wanted it.  And suffering through a losing season would have been made more palatable since we got to say goodbye to Eli the right way.

That also would have positioned them perfectly to take one of Herbert/Burrow/Tua the following year because they would have been in the top 5 almost certainly as Eli was pretty much done by that point.  And then they'd have had their next franchise QB without missing really much of anything.

It was all RIGHT there in front of them.  And Gettleman screwed it all up with one idiotic decision after another after another until this mess became all encompassing.  That's why hiring him is the biggest mistake the franchise made.  This debacle, which continued to derail the team even up until this season, started with hiring that guy to run the team.

Hiring DG..for sure..and building that sardine can stadium, too. Jones' contract..coaching misfires..etc..etc.

Many of the 'mistakes' mentioned here go directly to Gettleman, so hiring him was probably our biggest mistake. No Gettleman, then no Daniel Jones, Brakely, no Toney and the list goes on.

But besides that, not listening to Macadon't and not drafting Patrick Mahones. If they had listened, he might still be the coach of this team.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Ownership abandoning the hands off approach they way they did when they allowed George Young and Ernie Accorsi to run the team.

Jim,

You nailed it. Seems like Wellington learned how to stay hands off and then when he passed John slowly became more and more active in personnel decisions.

He forgot that he had nothing to do with Colonel Tom's hiring and somehow believed that he and Jerry Reese were responsible for any success they had up to that point.

From the day he chose JR over the Colonel, this organization has been under a black cloud.

From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

It would have required trading up past the Chiefs spot or beating their package to get the Bills 10th overall pick. Easier said than done.

Quote from: sxdxca38 on December 24, 2024, 11:14:50 AMFirst mistake, not drafting QB Sam Darnold or (Josh Allen) with the 2nd overall pick in 2018 and taking Barkley instead.

Second mistake, panicking and picking QB Daniel Jones instead of waiting for Hebert.

Third mistake, not drafting Herbert with the 4th pick overall in 2020.

Fourth mistake, drafting WR Kadarius Toney in 2021.

The first decision created a domino effect with which we are dealing with now.

Overall, before all of this was bringing in Gettleman as the GM, that was the icing on the cake.

LOL - you only get one!!!

Seriously, I have to agree with those who selected drafting another Duke QB. The moment I heard they did, I felt the premonition "Dave Brown, The Sequel," and I apologize to Dave Brown for saying that because the I respect the man for all he went through.

If John Mara DOES have any veto authority on draft pick candidates, it should be reserved for the next time the Giants want to draft another QB coming out of Duke. It's not a nice thing to say, because Dave and Daniel are both stand-up, classy gentlemen for the way they handled their respective situations with the Giants, but the final product hasn't translated well for the Giants organization.

Peace!

Phil Simms went to Morehead State.  So what difference is it where a player went to college? At Duke, Jones learned under David Cutcliffe who is widely regarded as one of the best offensive coaches in the game.

Jones threw 24 TD passes in 12 games his rookie season. This Board and Giants fans overall were ecstatic that the Giants found a franchise QB. But numerous injuries, horrible offensive lines, lack of skilled weapons and numerous coaching changes led to his demise.

Watching Lamar Jackson shred Houston, it has to be drafting Jones, who is clearly not an NFL caliber starter.

Trade up to 10th to take mahomes in the 2017 draft as macadoo wanted.

The chiefs went from 27 to 10, giving up their first round pick and a third round pick in 2017, and the Chiefs' first round pick in the 2018 draft.

We were 23rd, took engram. We could have offered the same to go to 9 or 10 and given we were 4 places higher, would have offered better value.

Imagine how the last 7 years would have gone if we'd had the balls...

Or, pick Allen at 2 instead of a running back... many of us think that's the most bone headed pick in history and Said so at the time.

Rich: This is so easy, because hindsight is 20/20 vision.

Number one would be, in 2017, trade up to Pick Eight or Nine and draft Patrick Mahomes.

There are a ton of other similar answers, but I think that one would have been "good enough" LOL.

If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

By who? What success has Cutcliffe had? Has he won national titles or lead a top NFL offense? Who are all these other great NFL players what he has developed? Why do we keep holding this man to such a high regard?

Quote from: MrGap92 on December 24, 2024, 10:34:17 AMIDK, Eli could have played that year, maybe he could have stayed one more, and they could have figured something out in the next draft or two.

If their draft slot stayed the same, they could draft Herbert or Tua in 2020.

had they put resources into the oline eli might still be playing.

You can't be serious right? He's almost 44.

Not today he wouldn't but instead of being done in 2019, I could see him making through 2020 or 2021
