Quote from: LennG on May 16, 2024, 12:31:56 PMOver the past few years, my wife and I watch any number of shows about 'how America' was built, how Foods built America, how cars built America, Mega companies built America and now a new series has premiered, How Disney Built Ameria. There are probably others along the way, but we are facianted by some of these shows which tell us how certain companies got started, how certain name brand foods got started and built up a mass market etc. etc.

So on to Disney. As a child we grew up with Disney, we watched Mickey, we watched the Mickey Mouse Club. we had those stupid 'ears' and we also made the trek to Disneyworld (Florida). We still love the 'older' animated movies where Disney just had something special.

anyway, this new series How Disney Made America

 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt32230356/

is very good. It really goes into detail about how he started his studio, what he had to go thru to get the first animated movie Snow White onto the screen now he has just completed Disneyland, and how he got the financing to make this happen. If anyone enjoys ser ies like these, it is an excellent watch.

I've been watching this series. It's very good. Walt was a genius and could see what he thought he could do, and he proved the doubters wrong time and again. I found it amazing that his brother Roy was always negative but in the end always ending up being a great help.

I watched the 4th episode of the Disney story. Again I found it to be very interesting. A couple of "Wow I didn't know that!" things. I hope you're still watching Lenn.

For anyone who hasn't seen it but may some day I would recommend you watch episode 4 before episode 3.

I did see it Bill and like you, WOW, I didn't know that. And, like you, we wondered why they put last week's episode before this one as the timeline would have been better.

PS-- mI used to have one of those Mickey watches. Wish I still did.

Just watched "The Blue Angels"  A documentary on prime video. Very good. Lots of detail information about a year with the Blue Angels. Incredible flying scenes.

I started "Ripley" on Netflix earlier this week. I am really enjoying it so far. A few comments:

(1) It is, as I am sure most know, based on the same novel by Patricia Highsmith that the movie "The Talented Mr. Ripley" is based on. The storyline is more or less the same in a broad sense.

(2) The characters are mostly the same people, but they are portrayed very differently than they are in the movie. The "Marge" character for example, played by Dakota Fanning, is a completely different take on the character than Gwyneth Paltrow's character. The Dickie character is also different in some ways.

(3) The show is in black and white, which for some is a negative. I don't see it that way, myself. Not only does it not bother me, but I actually think it is effective in making the 1950s time backdrop seem more authentic. I said this to my wife, and I'll say it here: if Netflix gave you the option of watching it in color or black and white, I'm not sure I'd pick the color option having now watched a few episodes in black and white.

(4) If you're someone who needs constant, face-paced, intense action, I would not recommend this show. There are some intense scenes, but it is on the slow, brooding side. It has more of a foreboding, macabre feel.

(5) The cinematography in this show is not just very good; it is exceptional. If you are someone who appreciates fine cinematography, I strongly recommend this show. I have been blown away by how good it is.

(6) Overall I am really enjoying the show. It is different from the movie, but still very good.

I watched "Atlas" on Netflix last night because I couldn't find anything else worth watching. I figured I'd give it a few minutes to decide whether-or-not to stick with it. Not a fan of J-Lo, but gave it a whirl anyway. I ended up watching the whole thing, and it was much better than expected, and I actually think J-Lo did a great job acting, despite her pending divorce from Afleck

Movie summary:

Reminded me an awful lot of a new version and different take off of "The Terminator", where AI and machines take over the world, with a splash of "Star Trek" (space travel and odd planets) thrown in. If you like thrillers, killing, savagery, and saving the world once again, you'll probably like this movie. It was one of the few movies that I didn't wish I could get the last two hours of my life back afterward. Definitely worth watching

The fact that Keith Richards has outlived Richard Simmons, sure makes me question this whole, "healthy eating and exercise" thing

Jolly Blue Giant

Watched "Retribution" (Hulu w/Starz add-on) with Liam Neeson, who is one of my favorite "tough guys"...although he didn't look so tough in "A Million Ways to Die in the West" when he is laying face down in the dirt with his pants pulled down and Charlize Theron sticking a daisy in his butthole, LOL...but I digress

Scene "fuzzed out" to avoid pornography on this board

Anyway, pretty good movie and lots of action/bloodshed/explosions, etc. Sorta along the theme of "Speed" with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves in which a bus blows up if it stops. Only, in this one, the car with Neeson and his two children blow up if anyone gets up off their seat, which will trigger a bomb and the bad guy giving instructions to steal 208 million Euros over the phone, and also has a remote switch to detonate the bomb

Supposedly, the best Neeson movie since "Taken", is dropping on Netflix today called "In the Land of Saints and Sinners", which I will get around to sometime this week...maybe tonight  :-??

Elsbeth was a phenomenal watch that put a spin on whodunits and a police procedural.

Also Mayor of Kingstown is back today.

That is all.

I watched "The Hitman" on Netflix. The story is a college professor who works part-time for the local PD doing IT/computer type stuff for them is pressed into service to act as a murder for hire hitman.
He really takes to the role and is good at it and things kind of snowball from there. And of course, there is a love interest which complicates things.
Overall, a fun movie. Not a comedy per se, but kind of light with what I thought was a good ending.
p.s. - loosely based on the real life of the main character, seems to have lead quite an interesting life!

Well, I finally finished 'The Wire' all 5 seasons of it and I have to say it was one of the best series I have seen in many years. Gosh, it has been over 10 years since it wrapped up but it is just as relevant today as it was then. If you don't mind lots of killings just for the sake of killing, loads of cursing, and a real look-see into the black ghetto and drug influence, this is a can't-miss watch. It did take me a long time to finish as I can only watch at certain times, like when my wife isn't around but I fully enjoyed all of it.

Now on to something new, has anyone watched 'Shogun'?

I know we have a great thread about D-Day on the main board, but I had copied some shows about D-Day on the DVR and now I am watching some of them. Yesterday I watched a terrific show on the History Channel,  "D-Day, the Unheard Tapes".
https://www.history.com/shows/d-day-the-unheard-tapes

It is a 2-part, 4-hour series. The twist to this is, that after D-Day they had several people record their remembrances about the day and the days afterward and put them on tape. They hired actors who sort of looked like the people who were interviewed, dressed them up in 'older' civies, and had them basically mouth the words that were on the tape, with all the emotion that recalling those memories might bring.
I found these 4 hours to be extremely interesting. I have heard many stories about D-Day from many who survived, but this sort of kink in the telling was remarkably well done and held my interest thru-out. If you are into these things and have the chance to see this show, I would recommend it very highly.

Don't laugh. I'm watching Deep Space 9. Mostly because I want to watch the Picard series and be up to date.

Just finished Young Sheldon which my wife and I very much liked.

Probably going to re-watch The Boys in anticipation for season 4.

I've heard good things about Shogun.
