I spoke on this before. They weren't looking for a backup QB that was capable of winning games because it would create a controversy. Mara needed to see that Jones is not the guy. Having someone on the bench that could actually win games would be counterproductive to improving the QB position.

I agree, and if they were serious about the back-up spot, they'd have signed Wilson, who came in for a visit for pennies and he just wanted a chance to compete. The Giants weren't interested in signing anyone that would put pressure on Jones.

This also isn't revisionist history; we spoke about this move in the offseason.  Again, it's obvious...

My best guess, and it is just an assumption, is since he is an ERFA and will likely be back in 2025, they rather see him some more to see if he can at the very least be their #2 moving forward since Lock was on a one year deal.

I don't think their level of talent evaluation are a factor here.

Also, they identified and signed Tyrod in 2022, who was a capable fill-in and consummate professional. So are we analyzing just their backup QB signing this past offseason? Seems to cut out a significant part of the equation. In any case, I personally don't care about the backup QB spot in terms of making a judgment about QB evaluation skills because it's not going to be that signing that determines Daboll or Schoen's future with the Giants...

The veteran backup would start if the goal was to win games.  The goal now is to evaluate the roster.  Nothing more nothing less.  Hyatt should play over slayton.  Neal should take every single snap the rest of the season if healthy.  If Dexter Lawrence pulls a hammy that requires 3 months to heal...so be it.  We need the young guys out there as much as possible to figure out if they are going to be part of the future or not.
