Quote from: coggs on January 02, 2025, 11:02:05 AMI dont have time to read the whole thing, will do so thank you for posting.  Things have changed though since 2020 with the NIL deals.  They are starting get paid big money to play in college.  Most of these kids are not going to come to their first NFL camp with the pressue that if they don't make a team, they are screwed financially.

It's the same reason why the vast number of Brazil's national team soccer players come from the barrios of Rio and Sao Paulo, Colombia's best cyclists come from very poor villages or American boxers come from poor urban areas.

I 100% understand that.  My point is the NIL is changing the landscape. Kids may be going to college from poor situations.  But they are not coming to the NFL in the same financial situation.  Days of Chris Weber complaining about how much money the Fab-5 was making for the school yet he couldnt afford to take his girlfriend to the movies are over.  They are not flocking to programs like Alabama because Nick Saban can get them to the next level in 4 years.  They are going to the college that is offering the most money now.

Great, what does that have anything to do with any one particular prospect?  We know that more affluent people are going to steer their kids away from gladiator sports in general.

JJ McCarthy is also a suburban kid from a better socioeconomic situation than most NFL players.  Just wondering, how come you didn't bring that up about him last year?

I would not blackball any one prospect over anything but saying if someone came from an affluent family or was a second generation player from a successful parent, I would due additional due diligence on them about that issue because while you can point to some successes, there are probably a lot more failures.

As far as JJ McCarthy, I watched probably every play he was in during his college career and participate in alumni organizations with ties to athletes.  One thing that was constantly mentioned about him through direct meetings or with discussions with other players was how much of a leader his teammates thought he was and how much they liked him.  Character was something that nobody ever questioned about McCarthy.

Friends of mine connected to UCLA football said nobody ever said that about Josh Rosen.  They said he punched in and punched out and was more of a loner.

Quote from: kartanoman on January 02, 2025, 11:02:44 AMI've liked this guy, Ed, and he's the heart of their offense.

Is it me, or is he just a half-step slow for the pro game?

I love his vision, the way he hits the holes and, obviously, his toughness in fighting for that extra yard. His goal line running yesterday speaks for itself.

A second? Maybe a third, but an outstanding combine might lift him up into the second round.

Nice player!

Peace!
And he was sick and throwing up all game. It was the first time I saw him play.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on January 01, 2025, 12:07:35 PMStockton was a four star recruit who had offers from Penn State and Alabama. People are making it out like he's going to be some train wreck. I don't see it myself.

I think Gunnar read what you wrote Jeff and he does not want to let you down.

Haha..good one.

Tight game so far but ND looks a little overmatched.

Yeah, he's been a local legend here in the Valley of the Sun. The Sun Devils had no business making it to a Bowl game, much less taking Texas to two OT in the Peach Bowl before finally succumbing in the end. But Skattebo has carried this team all year and, who knows, he may end up becoming a surprise in the NFL to whomever is looking to add punch to their running game. He definitely raised a lot of eyebrows of scouts watching the game.

Undeniable - The remarkable season of Cam Skattebo and Arizona State comes to a close

Peace!

Paul Finebaum is going to call in sick tomorrow.

Loved the way ND played tonight. They showed tremendous grit and came up with some big time plays on D. They were a bit undisciplined at times with penalties but they more than made up for that with their toughness.

As a PSU guy, I was hoping we could face Georgia as I believe we match up just a bit better against them.  However, after watching Georgia eat the Notre Dame's OL for lunch on passing downs today I think our DL will have a good shot at wreaking havoc- assuming, of course, we get Abdul Carter back at full strength next week.  ND doesn't have a running back better than the one we just shut down so it'll be interesting to see that matchup.

Our offense vs. their defense is gonna be interesting.  We will desperately need to get our running game going in order to open Tyler Warren up for some intermediate throws.  I also am planning on taking the over on both QB's rushing totals next week...I can see them both having success there as the other D clamps down on the RBs.

Should be a fun one to watch, anyway.  I simply love that we have 4 true college football blue bloods playing as the last 4 and would love to get another crack at Ohio State for the championship!!

Imagine him after a year in an NFL weight room? He looks to be that guy you want on 4th and goal on the one. I can see him getting drafted third round for sure.

The Giants could do a lot worse than Jaxson Dart.

The SEC programs were notorious relative to other conferences for paying prospects and players under the table which brought top talent to them.  Now with NIL and the transfer portal and paying players above the table, it has leveled the playing field around the country in using financial means to entice players to come to your school.
