I think the options available, on paper, were not great or better than what they had, so they didn't have much choice, which is why they constructed the contract how they did.

So you're saying they had no choice but to extend him even though they weren't 100% sold on him based on the market that year?

Agreed.  I think the reason Mara didn't want to lose Barkley was simply personal- he like him as a person, a team captain, and a face of the franchise.  I don't think it had anything to do with putting butts in the seats.  Winning teams do that, not running backs.

Was their a spike in suite sales while Barkley was here?  Those suites are sold as long term leases and they are corporate bought.  The corporate sponsorship money was there long before Barkley was on the team and will continue to be there long after all of us and Barkley are gone.

Pretty clear that Mara wanted it to work quite desperately with Daniel Jones for a number of reason. One was that whole "we did everything to damage Daniel Jones: line. Which I guess is kind of understandable. mara for all his faults does seem to be a stand-up guy who wants to give someone their due. I mean it just so happens ths team has stunk and, it came time to pay Jones a boat load of money -- I just don't see Mara as a cutthroat wheeler dealer that can say :xxxx happens" I am not paying this guy.

The other part of this is Mara's in general have been conservative and unwilling to change. I remember many years ago, reading in the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Ernie had to drag Wellington kicking and screaming to draft Eli Manning.

It would have been easy to convince Mara to let Barkley walk. The whole rest of the league knows about singing RBs to second contracts. That would have been a big step to go against consensus. Just like letting Jones walk also would have been. There were options out there if you really wanted to. .You could have drafted Levis or Bo Nix. You could have signed Darnold or D Carr or Aaron Rodgers or Kirk Cousins. If you really believed in what you were doing; instead you just went with flow and what the general rules were. Shoen getting to pick the bottom half of a roster is not the same thing as Shoen being allowed to let Jones walk and sign a 150 million dollr free agent without Mara approval. Don't kid yourself.
